I was waiting for this book for months ... ever since I finished reading the previous book in the O'Malley series.
Each book in the O'Malley series can be read as a stand-alone novel, but they are a continuing story about the same 'family'. This is a family with very close ties, and each novel so far has concentrated on one of the family, with insights into the other members.
The Protector is the story of Jack, the firefighter. An arsonist is setting fires in Jack's area, and it looks like the attacks are personal - they are always on Jack's shift. The arsonist leaves messages that increase in intensity on each occasion - will they be able to discover the culprit before death occurs? Will Jack accept Christ before it's too late?
We see how Jack tries to get close to a fellow firefighter who is a burns victim. Apart from Jack being an unbeliever, Cassie finds it hard to trust anyone, having emotional scars as well as physical one resulting from a dreadful fire in which she was badly injured. She now returns to work to try help find the arsonist.
It is very hard to put down this novel, and I have read it again and again. There is a lot of suspense, and it is not until the end of the book before you are sure whodunnit. I am looking forward to the next book in the series about Rachel, and hope to also find out more about the other O'Malley's.
