Book Description

Three men: an Iraqi, a former coalition soldier and a journalist, drive together from Baghdad towards Fallujah as the US Marines encircle the city to take it apart. It seems the men are on a single mission to seek a recent kidnap victim, but in truth all three have very different aims in the besieged town, and each keep a dark secret from the others. Greed, ambition - and guilt - are what separates their individual motivations, but a single miscalculation could bring an end to them all . . .

More About the Author

Duncan Falconer is a former member of Britain's elite Special Boat Service and 14 Int., Northern Ireland's top-secret SAS undercover detachment. His first book, the bestseller First Into Action, documented the real-life exploits of the SBS.

After more than a decade of operational service he left the SBS and went into the private security circuit. In the past few years, Falconer has operated at length and often alone in places such as Afghanistan, the Nigerian Delta, Palestine, Liberia and throughout Iraq, sometimes writing his books while bullets shower the compound he is staying in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic. A real ride!!! 27 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
I don't understand why the other reviewers were so harsh on this book. Perhaps it's because they have never been to Baghdad. I have, several times, and I found the book to be very realistic and exciting. Falconer describes it as it really is - believe me. I've even been to the Palestine hotel and I know the attack he describes really took place. 'Zeddy's' review was unfair and way over the top - but then I checked his review status and he's ranked 300,000th so I suppose no one really takes his seriously. Bottom line is, if you want to get a real taste of Baghdad, as it really is (or was actually a couple years ago - it's changed more since), read this book. The plot is nail-biting, the scenes chillingly accurate, and altogether a real ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have reading 1 Dec. 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have become a huge fan of Duncan Falconer, My favorite author was Peter James, but after reading Falconers books there is no doubt the author has tremendous qualities in "keeping you hooked and in suspense". The attention to detail is brilliant, without being over the top or boring. Falconer delivers every time, so much so you want to finish one book and go on to the next!!!
John Stratton is the "man" featured in Falconers "undersea Prison" "The Operative" and "Hijack" amongst others, If you like books that are action packed, with suspense, and twists and turns, and are about true life issues which our guys in Afghanistan and Iraq are coming to terms with, Falconer is your author.
Brilliant Author Sensational reading!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rollercoaster ride through the carnage of Iraq. 21 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This novel is a fast paced intelligent thriller from perhaps the most skilled author that emerged from the original Gulf war.
It is the characterisation that stands out above all else, although the action sequences are very well written. Falconer is able to create atmosphere and tension and he describes the landscape and setting in fine detail.
The book is written from both an English and Arab perspective and that is what gives it more weight. The author's insight and knowledge of the way in which the military work and the 'protection' business operates makes for an excellent thriller about people caught in a situation that either through greed or political ideoligy leaves them fighting for their lives in a hostile environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging story and character development 14 Dec. 2007
Format:Paperback
A slightly different read by Falconer - no special forces operations but a nonetheless well written and entertaining book. For one I enjoyed the slow build up with the development of very realistic characters trying to survive a country going to hell. I thought the last 100 pages were a bit rushed in concluding the story but, unlike his character "Stratton" Falconer took great steps to show the very human side of his characters, whereas Stratton remains a unknown, lonely soul despite several outings.
I came away highly entertained and looking forward to the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read 20 Aug. 2007
Format:Hardcover
Different from the other Falconer's because there are several main characters, and therefore a little slower to start, but it's an excellent read and is definitely worth reading. It desserves a sequel.

1.0 out of 5 stars The protector 17 Jan. 2014
By dave e
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having purchased all of mr falconers books and really enjoyed them. Now reached the last one (the protector) and find it very disappointing , it's as if someone else wrote it. Very slow and did not grip me as the others did, in fact so bad I give up on it after about 2 chapters even skipped ahead and it was no better. Not recommend .

5.0 out of 5 stars Three stories in one 29 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a great way to inter weave what starts as very separate stories. Duncan Falconer has again shown a great talent in writing thrilling stories that don't travel the usual well worn path, but at the same time delivering a dependable read to keep his fans happy. Great read to escape to. Highly recommend it.
