Review

‘The most controversial self-help book of the year.’ INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

‘A hot meal on the table, a dab of fresh lipstick and sex on demand: such are the duties of a modern wife as described in a runaway bestseller that is infuriating the feminist lobby across America…Dr Laura Schlessinger, a controversial radio host prompts angry mutterings among the politically correct but her forthright views on just who in a marriage should pick up the dirty underpants are winning over the mainstream.’
THE SUNDAY TIMES

- ‘with 17 million listeners the 57 year-old New Yorker is America’s favourite on-air counsellor.’

Product Description

In her most provocative book yet, Dr. Laura urgently reminds women that to take proper care of their husbands is to ensure themselves the happiness and satisfaction they yearn for in marriage. Women want to be in love, get married, and live happily ever after. Yet disrespect for men and disregard for the value, feelings, and needs of husbands has fast become the standard for male-female relations in America. Those two attitudes clash in unfortunate ways to create struggle and strife in what could be a beautiful relationship. Countless women call Dr. Laura, unhappy in their marriages and seemingly at a loss to understand the power they have over their men to create the kind of home life they yearn for. Now, in "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands," Dr. Laura shows you how to wield that power to attain all the sexual pleasure, intimacy, love, joy, and peace you want in your life. With real-life examples -- and real-life solutions -- Dr. Laura's simple principles have changed the lives of millions. Now they can change yours. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

After reading so many self-help guides and books on marriage, adultery, monogamy, divorce etc, this book was the only one that rammed it home to me. I read it from cover to cover in about 5 hours and by the end I was crying. I could not believe how much of a monster I had been to my husband over the past few years, who is a good, decent, kind, honest and hard working man. The book teaches you that in order to change aspects of your husband, you first have to change yourself. And if your husband doesn't change - that's because he can't. He is a man after all, and men are not better or worse than their wives, they are just different. So we should learn to accept and even embrace those differences. This is one of the best, most life changing and most marriage changing books I have ever read. And thanks to the advice of the author, my marriage is now stronger and happier than it has ever been before.

I read this book in one sitting. I considered myself happily married but always had the usual gripes about my husband not being romantic enough, blah, blah, blah. Reading this book has been a revelation, it opened my eyes to the fact that I have a wonderful husband, and although he doesn't buy me flowers all the time he always washes up, runs my bath, etc., etc., which according to this book is his way of showing me he loves me. I have been taking him granted for so long, I'm just lucky he's stuck around long enough for me to find this book. It's not all about losing 'power', if anything treating your husband with more respect will actually give you more power because with a little respect and appreciation your husband will be willing to walk through fire for you. Can't recommend it enough.

Surprisingly Good! 3 Aug 2004

Format:Paperback
This book has many practical ways of dealing with your husband. It gets you to take look at your own behaviour and change yourself. Some would think it is old fashioned and anti-feminist but I think it is pro women. If you take just one piece of advice from the book it will change your life. Truely inspiring, entertaining and well worth the money.
