I can never really look at this book objectively as I empathise a great deal with the main character, but I still feel that this is one of the greatest novels ever written for young people. As World War 2 begins in the North East, Bob finds himself attracted to a sickly girl called Valerie who infrequently attends his school. The attraction turns to obsessional love, and that mutual obsession continues even after Valerie's death. The book is beautifully written in the first person and Westall really draws you into the world he knew so well. The people are alive and their emotions are real; you could almost cry for them. He makes you think about the very nature of love, life and death. It is a ghost story where the hero actually wants to haunted. There are wonderful moments of tenderness and humour to offset the tragic heart of this story and if you are aged between 12 and 16, I cannot recommend this book too strongly.
