Kirk Whalum is in love. He’s in love with music. He’s in love with God. He’s in love with passing on his knowledge by educating and training our youth. He’s in love with languages. And he’s in love with his wife of over 30 years.

Many decry a lack of role models for our youth to emulate, especially when it comes to men ... Read more in Amazon's Kirk Whalum Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice contemporary jazz 9 Dec 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Whalum gets real feeling into his playing, and from start to finish, this is a really nice album. Whalum's horn is one of the nicest I've heard. If you want authentic, improvisational jazz, try Joshua Redman or Stan Getz. This album is strictly pop, more like David Sanborn or Dave Koz, though Whalum's horn is much richer than Sanborn's, and his songs are much, much better than Koz's. Check out "Ma Foi" and "L.C.'s Back," which features Larry Carlton on guitar. Great put-the-top-down music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Demonstrates Kirk's artistry 21 Oct 2004
By G. Bates - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This Title just indicates what the future held and continues to hold for Kirk Whalum. This CD is different from prior two releases in 85&88 in that it is more pop oriented. Several friends are heard throughout Kirk's sax (mostly tenor). Bob James, Larry Carlton and Paul Jackson Jr. are all heard throughout the CD. Particularly nice tunes are LC's back featuring Mr. 335 himself, Larry Carlton, and the Jerry Peters titletrack tune The Promise. The CD can be enjoyed many times over.

The Promise is truly Kink's greatest work, a timeless piece of music full of passion, joy, wonder and imagination. Enjoy this one with the one you love. My hat off to you man.
