And "Adam 12" this ain't. These cops never heard of the Miranda rule!

A terrific action-packed police series from the UK, but only available in Region 2 encoding, so you will need a multi-region DVD player to watch them. Hopefully, a DVD collection will be available in Region 1 encoding for us here in the USA. Check [...] for ordering if interested.

Although the series was criticized for being too violent and somewhat sexist upon its release, The Professionals is both a gritty, tense, and realistic crime series. These episodes are a refreshing antidote to the politically-correct police dramas that poliferate today's cable and regular broadcast networks with cops that are apparently more comfortable in the laboratory than fighting the bad guys.

Ex-soldier Bodie and former street cop Doyle (Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw), are the agents for CI5 with Scotsman George Cowley (Gordon Jackson)as their no-nonsense boss. All three characters are unconventional, tough, and uncompromising foes of international crime, corruption, terrorism and anarchy. Seriously, this is an enjoyable and entertaining crime drama--the action simply does not let up.

The interplay and the banter between the three characters is excellent and, at times, very amusing. Bodie and Doyle are a couple of wiseasses who often take the law into their own hands and require Cowley keep them in line. The scripts and the stories around are interesting and hardly feel dated at all.

The transfers in this set are uncut and digtially remastered and look reasonably good for their age (circa 1977-80).

The series is an unconventional and refreshing combination of action and drama a la "Starsky and Hutch" and "Lethal Weapon." Exciting viewing all the same..Enjoy!

Still as brilliant! 6 Aug 2006
I remember The Professionals from my childhood. Just watching the opening credits is enough to take me back! The amazing thing is that it hasn't lost any of it's entertainment value.

The Professionals are three characters, Cowley, Bodie and Doyle. They are part of a counter-terrorist and counter-criminal team known as CI5. The stories are often based around finding a hitman or stopping some kind of terrorist attack. This gives The Professionals a relavence today. Indeed it also shows us that the world hasn't changed so much - apart from the TV being more entertaining back then!

If you've not seen The Professionals before, you like cop shows and you are not crazy about being politically correct, then you'll love this.

Ridiculous but great 21 Nov 2010

Want to go back to late 70's London when men were invincible, the police (or CI5) could do whatever the heck they wanted, and women were all blonde, brainless and scantily clad?
Look no further. Here is your 4-disc, digitally remastered time-machine. Although by digitally remastered I think they mean they've just cleaned a bit of the fluff off the film. It's very watchable quality though.
There's great chemistry between CI5 agents Bodie and Doyle, and pretty good stories. It's tongue in cheek, and occasionally quite funny. There's also a lot of unintentional hilarity caused by the sexism. I suppose I should find it a bit offensive, but to be honest, it was 30 years ago - and fortunately for me, it's just funny now.
Its like another world. It's got flared trousers, big collars, boxy cars and everything.

Here's the episodes:
Old Dog with New Tricks - the Home Secretary is kidnapped
Long Shot - George Cowley (the Boss)is under threat by an assassin
Where the Jungle Ends - A band of mercenaries rob banks
Killer with a Long Arm - Another assassin is on the loose
Heroes - A US politician is assassinated (frikkin' assassins)
Private madness, Public Danger - a nutter tries to poison the water supply
The Female factor - The KGB, pimps and Prime Ministers.
Everest was Also Conquered - A case from the 50s needs solving
Close Quarters - Bodie and his 'bird' Julia are trapped in a country house by terrorists
Look After Annie - Bodie and Doyle have to protect a left-wing Christian evangelist
When the heat Cools Off - A man Doyle put in prison claims he is innocent
Stakeout - in a bowling alley, obviously
Klansmen - Not shown on TV. Are the Ku Klux Klan in Britain?
Rogue - Bodie and Doyle's CI5 mentor goes rogue
