More About the Author

Karen Miller was born in Vancouver, Canada, and moved to Australia with her family when she was two. Apart from a three-year stint in the UK, after graduating from university with a BA in Communications, she's lived in and around Sydney ever since. Karen started writing stories while still in primary school, where she fell in love with speculative fiction. She's done a variety of interesting jobs, but now writes full-time.

Product Description

Review

Miller is clearly a very talented writer: her characterisation is a masterclass in nuance and sensitivity, and she has a visceral way with action ... a compelling portrait of a blighted world in the company of flawed, fascinating people (SFX)

Strong characters with clear viewpoints carry the story forward ... this new series shows great potential (Publishers Weekly) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I love this author and think she really tells a great story, so I was excited to buy this book. Oh dear, yawn yawn. It finally got interesting in the last few chapters but it was not worth the slog through most of the book to get to it. It felt to me like she was trying to get a trilogy out of this series and was just writing filler. Very disappointing. I would wait till the next one come out if you are thinking of buying it.

This is the sequel to the Innocent Mage duology. The world the story takes place in is well defined and the plot interesting. Unfortunatelty it justs takes too long to work up to the main advent. Asher's reasons for keeping Rafael's magic hidden are a bit weak and Asher himself is not as strong a character as he was previously. Still it makes for a good read and hopefully the sequel due out next year will mark a return to form.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two novels of this series and although I thought that this instalment got off to a bit of a slow start, it soon picked up the pace and my imagination once again ran wild. I cannot wait for the final book to be released shortly to continue this final chapter of a great adventure.

I'm on the last few pages of this one and it feels like it's taken a while to get there. I read the first couple of books about Asher (Innocent and Awakened Mage) which were ok so I wasn't expecting great things to be honest. I'd run out of books to read before the new Brent Weeks came out!

The storyline has some good aspects and I like where the book is going towards the end, but it does take some time to get there. I will persevere and finish this and the Reluctant Mage, but I just wish they had a little more action!

I am a great fan of the first two books Innocent Mage & Awakened Mage. It was great to see some of the old characters in the book but it took some getting into, I think the writer kept going over the same thing to put her point accross, I couldn't really get into it until halfway & then it picked up pace dramatically. The ending is fantastic - Cliffhanger or The End - read it and see what YOU think !!

A bit slow in places and sometimes a bit irritating but generaly a cracking good story if the author learned to curb her desire to overstate and over explain this would be a bit shorter book and a better tighter story but generaly good

If you're looking for a book about an arrogant family constantly squabbling this is the book for you. If you're looking for an entertaining book about mages I suggest you look elsewhere. I spent the whole of the book waiting for something to happen but not much does. It's hard to engage with a story when all you want to do is cuff all the characters round the head for being so stupid.
