Product Description

This, shockingly, is a true story; a story of the descent of an ordinary good mother into a life of abject misery, humiliation and submission at the hands of the Probation Officer, a sociopath. Initially charming, he saw his victim simply as an instrument to be used. She thought he loved her. A pathological liar, he almost destroyed her and her family. Demanding attention, he wanted everyone close to her out of her life and almost succeeded. Physically violent, he told her he hit her because he loved her and she almost believed it when, afterwards, he tucked her into bed and read her poetry as if nothing had happened. Abusive to her children, they quickly left home, visiting only when they knew he wasn’t there. The pet rabbit wasn’t as lucky. He killed her. The woman has no name, for as she says in the book, her name never mattered.
Based upon a selection of her own diary entries the book is deliberately narrated in a stark, minimalist fashion, emphasizing the insignificance of the woman in the Probation Officer's eyes as nothing more than a chattel.

Throughout this time, the man continued to work as a respectable Probation Officer, going about his business, working with offenders both in prison and in the community. No one, but no one would have suspected what he was doing in his private life. This is an insight into that story.

A little impersonal 2 Feb 2012
By Pat
Format:Kindle Edition
It was a good story, but a little dis-jointed. Perhaps not enough facts were told to make sense of the situations and not enough emotion was portrayed to give reason to why this woman put up with being treated so abysmally for so long.

The text changes from passages in the third person to passages in the first person. The two people in the story, are never given names in these third person accounts but referred to constantly as 'the Probation Officer' and 'she' and it is very impersonal. The notes in first person are far better and give some explanation as to what the author was thinking, but not enough.

It's worth a read for all the examples of control and humiliation that are listed and how to spot signs of a sociopath, but for me there were many unanswered questions.

How can women be so weak 26 Jan 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is important to tell the stories of abuse as long as the emphasis is on NO ONE HAS TO ENDURE IT. Set in England with a much stronger social welfare system than the US, there were many opportunities to get help. The fact that this was a sociopath who worked for the system only meant that she had to be smarter. On the surface she appeared strong, had a job, supported her children, and even went to classes, all the while she was a victim to such cruelty. I would have thought that when it came to her kids, losing one, and then another as they left so they didn't have to face the crazy, she would have found the strength to break away. But no, denial is a way of life for some people. I sometimes think that some people go through life with "victim" invisibly tattooed on their foreheads in an ink that only predators can see. But to include her children in the cycle of crazy is just too much. When she had a girl child with him, didn't she ever stop to think that this child could end up abused? Years of abuse and conditioning can only explain why she submitted, not why she didn't protect her children. Everybody's reality is different. This is exemplified by saying towards the end of her daughter: "she cursed me; the mother who most likely would have given her own life for that of her child". A little late for that sentiment since she had watched this man abuse her sons. The last insult to the reader was the statement: "I do believe that as she gets older she will come to understand that all I am doing, have ever done, is my best." How self delusional.
