Jeremy Pratt's first book in the PPL Course series covers the exercises 1-19 in clear and interesting detail. Each exercise consists of first a "background briefing", in which most of the detail is covered, then generally an "airmanship" page or two for each exercise, and then a page of progressive graphic (plus explanatory text!) instructions of what is physically done during the exercise. To make the most of your flying lessons, it is possible to go over these exercises beforehand with a flight simulator - it's nice to go in with a clue about what you are going to do!

Good book for starters 1 April 2010
Having only just decided to go for an NPPL, my local flying club recommended the AFE series as part of the curriculum.

A good thorough explanation of topics as required for PPL and NPPL. Although sometimes lacks the in-depth explanations of subject matter.

All in all, a good series for PPL and such but if you want finer detail, you may have to search for it.

AFE Manuals 13 Dec 2011
The Thom series are widely used by the CAA examination board as a reference to examination questions (as shewn in my examiners answer book) but we use the Pratt AFE series in our fast track 1-5 day PPL courses too and would recommend both as really there is little to choose between them.

It is always useful to look at a range of different books on the same subject as sometimes a new perspective can make something more understandable. Students should also consider that it is essential to complete all the questions (in each chapter) on each subject to promote a better, lasting understanding. Practice examination papers are also useful but should not be used to learn the subject as that defeats the object of the examination process. Good sound knowledge combined with sensible application and pro active situational awareness is the foundation of being a safe, professional pilot.

Many students look at the examinations as an obstruction to gaining the licence which is a shame. Flying is a knowledge and rule based discipline and education plays a major part in those goals for all of us. Learn and be safe!
