Book Description

11 Jun 2012
Shawn Maguire, an unempoyed American spy, is paid to find a suspected terrorist kidnapped by his former colleagues in the CIA. Travelling with the prisoner's beautiful but mysterious wife, Shawn follows the detainee's trail from Paris to Morocco, then to Egypt and Pakistan. But it isn't long before Shawn discovers that nothing is quite what it seems and he'll need all of his CIA training to survive. If it comes down to a fight, he believes he can handle the prisoner. But will he be able to handle the prisoner's wife? The "Prisoner's Wife" is a tense trip through the murky worlds of state-sponsored terrorism, secret American jails, and extraordinary and lawless rendition that will grip fans of John le Carre.

Review

"Living in Paris in 2004, former CIA spy Shawn Maguire accepts a freelance job to find an Iranian named Darius Osmani. Abducted by the CIA after claiming to have information about a nuclear device, Osmani is being interrogated in one of its secret "black prisons" as a suspected terrorist. Maguire's efforts to track him and avoid his own downfall are complicated by his attraction to Osmani's wife, Danielle. Maguire was drummed out of the CIA for drinking and violent behavior. A major burnout, he's out of money, attending meetings for sex addiction, mourning the death of his wife and under pressure from his former bosses to do a nasty job for them. As spies go, Maguire is a decent, straight-shooting soul--and not only when he's putting his skills as a sniper to work. As he searches for Osmani, on a road that takes him and Danielle to Morocco, Egypt and the political danger zone of Pakistan--where U.S. intelligence has secret plans for the soon-to-be-reinstated female prime minister--he must remain on his toes with the seductive wife and his old CIA pal Bobby, who is still with the Company. Conspiracies abound in this book, a sophisticated and suspenseful effort with crackling dialogue and evocative scenery. Maguire is a first-rate protagonist, complicated and heroic. And the book does a great job capturing the casual lawlessness of the American intelligence effort via its rendition campaigns and the propping up or deposing of criminal leaders depending on America's needs. For those who wondered where spy novels could go in the aftermath of the Cold War, John le Carre isn't the only one providing the answers. They also can be found here and, one hopes, in a batch of sequels. Though this is McDonald's first adult novel, it boasts the assurance and authority of a veteran spymaster, making us feel like we've been reading this author for years."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Prisoner's Wife is an exception 20 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
At the ripe old age of 72, the pile of unread books by my bedside is becoming oppressive, and I don't have time to waste any on thrillers. But The Prisoner's Wife is an exception. Yes, there are bits that are classic spy novel: the undertone of fear; peaks of terror, occasional violence, the hunt, betrayal, bewilderment.

But the characters and the plot are not ordinary. An aging ex-CIA man, given to introspection and talking to his dead wife, a feisty young woman who engages the reader's sympathy and the hero's heart; a tale of "extraordinary rendition" set mostly in Europe and North Africa, but governed by Bush politics in the Middle East. The heartlessness and indifference of rulers, the cruelty of war, and the duplicity of governments is set against the individual's striving to set things right, his search for love and tenderness, for a bit of peace and a place in the sun. It is beautifully told.
So much so that I ordered Macdonald's next book, The Kingmaker, not yet out in the UK, but published in the US.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Thriller 27 Nov 2012
By Cyril
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an intelligent thriller that didn't fail to excite. At first it jumped around with the chapters introducing new characters seemingly without connection, but this soon became a wonderful gripping tale I couldn't put down. Highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing 1 Nov 2012
By F Blake
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I set aside the book I was reading - which was a good book - because I got pulled into this one. This espionage thriller has a great pace, vivid, fantastic dialogue and characters which are introduced succinctly and plausibly, then developed within the narrative very well. The plotting is tight, the suspense just right and I enjoyed very much the handling of the personal with the political. The question of trust runs as a deep vein throughout this text. Thoroughly would recommend. Would welcome too, a sequel or prequel - or both.
