Remember this pair (Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr) from King Solomon's Mines (1950)? Well they did it again with The Prisoner of Zenda (1952). There is all of the sward play and loyalty of the first version, plus the interaction and reaction of Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr to add to this.
For those of you who may have missed the story King Rudolf V, who is not the nicest of guys is gets drugged out of the way. Because all Kings named Rudolf look like Stewart Granger, a vacationing Englishman, who happens to be a long lost cousin, he gets to substitute for the stability of the country and to foil the bad guys (his half-brother Michael, Duke of Strelsau (Robert Douglas) form taking over. So the question is what happened to the king? Do the bad guys win or are they foiled? Who gets the girl? Who doe the girl get? And why are you reading this when you can watch the movie?

This version of the Prisoner of Zenda is my favourite. It follows the earlier black and white version almost scene for scene but the addition of glorious technicolor and Stewart Grainger makes it superb. Grainger is perfect as the look a like of the royal prince held captive by the evil villain. Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. is also superb as Rupert of Henztau. Deborah Kerr is, I feel just a little too old as the princess but all in all the casting is great, the sword fights excellent and the scenery stunning. A great family film, highly recommended.

Vastly inferior to the The 1937 film which starred Ronald Colman, Madeleine Carroll and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Not recommended, unless you are in love with the wooden Miss Kerr
