The story in the book itself is fine and its well illustrated in lovely bright colours. The text is a little small print, especially as far as encouraging young readers, but it was OK. If it had been a normal cover it would have got 4 stars. The cover / binding was hideous. I've never experienced another book like it. basically its 2 thin pieces of cardboard (similar thickness to a normal ladybird hardback) but the edges are open / unsealed like in a board book. The back and front are held together by some gold tape, but the pages stick out further than the covers. I know its cheap but I would still expect better quality if I had downloaded and printed it out myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Retelling misses part of the story... 19 Jun. 2013

I downloaded this to my Kindle app on my Galaxy Notw 2--it's great for keeping my little one occupied in line or in a waiting room. This retelling cuts right to the chase--20 mattresses, + 20 featherbeds...no additions each night to test whether or not it was a fluke that the girl did not sleep. I always loved the additions and the suspense created! Still, it was a cute story, and most important, my four year old didn't know the difference. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars How Many Mattresses? 11 Dec. 2013
By prisrob - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
'The Princess And The Pea' is one of those books that is truly a fairy tale. Most children love this tale and the book brings out a great deal of conversation.

A prince is searching for his true princess. One of his tests to ascertain if the princess is indeed real, is to place a small pea under a mattress and then add 20 mattresses on top. If a young woman can feel the pea, than, she is, indeed, a princess. Princess wanna be's come and go , until the real one is found. My granddaughter loves this story and likes to hear about all the mattresses that are laid upon a single pea. Many questions are asked about the pea, mattresses, princes and princesses. It is good to discuss this is a fairy tale and is not true.

The illustrations are bright and colorful. Vivid pictures jump off the page, the prince, the princess and the mattresses come alive. The writing is the fairy tale from yore, the ones we remember as children.

My daughter was in tears when he had to return this book to the library so of course she got this version as a reward one week. Moderate length which is always a benefit for me and her and she loves her golden books.

This is my favorite fairy tale, and not my daughter and I enjoy it together. It is short, sweet and to the point. I am so glad someone finally put out a good version.
