Product Description

Box set containing two popular feature films. In 'The Princess Diaries' (2001), San Francisco teenager Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) just wants to get through the rigours of high school unharmed, avoiding as many of life's petty embarassments as possible. However, when her long-lost grandmother Clarisse (Julie Andrews) appears out of the blue, Mia gets the surprise of her life; it seems she is the princess of a tiny principality called Genovia, and is in fact next in line to the throne. Angry that this news has been kept from her, Mia nevertheless agrees to embark on a crash course of princess lessons. But when she begins to get lost in a comic flurry of bungled state engagements and over-eager media attention, the prospective princess begins to wonder if the royal life is really the right life for her. In 'The Princess Diaries 2 - Royal Engagement' (2004), American high school graduate Mia Thermopolis has just turned 21, and is being groomed to succeed her grandmother as Queen of Genovia. But it materialises that an ancient Genovian law decrees that unmarried women cannot take the throne, and the bitter Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies) and his cronies oppose her coronation. When Queen Clarice (Julie Andrews) asks that Mia be given 30 days to find a husband, Mabrey is reluctant to allow it - but little does he know that his own nephew, the young and handsome Nicholas (Chris Pine), has caught Mia's eye.

Although clearly about the same characters, these films are quite different in a number of ways. The first has all the elements of a teen film: there's Mia's choice between everything she's ever known and her duty as a princess, the best friend who's alienated as Mia's character picks 'the other crowd', some posh frocks, a love interest that may or may not work, and lots of dashing about at the end, where we receive the final twist in the plot. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews give excellent performances and most age groups will enjoy the film.

I have to say I prefer the second film. It's more like a teen version of Bridget Jones' Diary with tiaras because of the witty dialogue (obviously less explicit!) between Mia and the seemingly dastardly chap who wants to steal the throne from her, but we can all see from the outset that he fancies her to bits! This film is about Mia's realisation that she cannot rule if she doesn't get over her insecurities, and must once again make a decision from her heart. There's also another baddie to put the spanner in the works; a little like the one in 'What A Girl Wants'. Anne Hathaway delivers a fantastic performance in the second instalment, and the chemistry between the couple makes you realise that this is a downright sexy film in places (if you read between the lines), even though the little ones (mine are 5 and 7) are impressed with the simple romance of it all. If you are old enough that you can hardly remember what it was like to be a teen in love, this film should help you remember! <chuckle> The second film is worth buying just to see the slumber party where Julie Andrews blesses us with a song. In fact, there's a duet with Raven, the multi-talented lass we've clocked on the Disney Channel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great films 22 Mar 2014

Good boxset with the two films in and for a good price too! Princess Diaries is about a normal schoolgirl who wants to get through school and pass tenth grade... until she gets a bombshell. Nice film to watch as a lot of people can relate to Mia (main character played by Anne Hathaway) The second one carrys on from the first and is full of hilarious scenes and you see Mia deal with many things as a princess...
