Product Description

CD Description

Born in Grenada, Leslie A. Hutchinson achieved fame and success in London, as a performer who played the piano and sang and whose fans included royalty.

Hutch was a protégé of Cole Porter who he met in Paris in the 1920s, and who taught him socially and intellectually, as well as about music, clothes and style. Two of the songs that Porter wrote for Hutch, "Let's Do It" and "Begin The Beguine" are included on this CD, and it was he who showed Hutch exactly how he wanted his songs played and performed.

Hutch came to London in 1927 to appear in a West End revue. His fame grew in Britain through radio and personal appearances and he recorded over 600 songs for various British labels between the 1920s and 1954. This CD comprises the very last 78s Hutch made in the 1950s and most are appearing on CD for the first time.

Hutch in the 1950s 22 Feb 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent CD featuring Hutch recording songs in the 1950s, with just as much feeling, care, and interpretation as in his 1930s recordings. Htuch is in fine voice throughout. I particularly liked the choice of songs - 'Too Many Martinis' is clever and sophisticated, and 'On the First Warm Day' is a little known song by Bart Howard who wrote 'Fly Me to the Moon'. Both of these and others on the CD deserve to be heard more widely. Hutch accompanies himself on the piano and the backing groups are good.

By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This excellent Sepia compilation has the perfect reason for purchasing it, as it contains mostly new to CD songs from the early to mid 1950s a period not previously covered in any depth by the other labels. Previously we have only been given the tiniest amount of 1950s material and I suppose to many it is his signature numbers that they want to hear however Hutch was around throughout the 1950s and these songs provide evidence that the magic was still there and even more subtle than before. The classic "Let's Do It" and "Begin the Beguine" are given a fresh interpretation and the latter has an exotic arrangement with great bongo drum sequences. The songs from the musicals, "I Talk to the Trees" from Paint Your Wagon and the two numbers from "Guys & Dolls" are excellent and well worth hearing. The inclusion of all 8 songs from "At the Piano" is much appreciated as all tracks are with Bob Sharples and his orchestra and have a unique atmosphere. The CD is a super addition to the vintage collections already out there and will be a must for collectors of Hutch and nostalgia.
