Book Description

6 Oct 2009
This is an adventure story set in Malaysian Borneo. Choco-Snaps Cereals and Flyaway Airlines run a competition offering a once in a lifetime holiday. The winner, twelve year old Amy Applegate, accompanied by her best friend George, chooses to visit orphaned orang-utans. They pack their gadget filled penknives and leech socks and head for Asia. They are looked after by local guide Izzy, who takes them on many adventures including the exploration of bat-filled caves and encounters with deadly reptiles. She also arranges a stay with an Orang Ulu tribe at a traditional longhouse. From their host Terangu, they learn the secrets of poison darts and animal tracking. However, one animal eludes them. Where are the long-nosed monkeys? At the longhouse, the fun of firing blowpipes and eating dragonflies with ginger gives way to fear as a mysterious event tests their bravery and friendship in the face of adversity. Will they be able to solve The Primate Puzzle before it is too late?

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Tale! 28 Nov 2009
I bought this book to read to my God Daughter (aged 7) and she was captivated by the story from the very first page. The fantastic illustrations (by Bethanie Cunnick) for each chapter really conjure up images of the tale, whilst the excellent descriptive passages keep you on tenterhooks. It is worth noting that the story has many educational and environmental messages as well as a fast-paced adventure to enthral imaginations of all ages. I hoped this story would keep my God Daughter entertained for the whole week we were on holiday - alas, after finishing it, we were looking for further reading material on the third day! I would recommend "The Primate Puzzle" to any readers from eight to one hundred! A first class novel, for a fantastic cause. The Primate Puzzle: A Tale of Two Friends and the Missing Long-nosed Monkeys

Brilliant - I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and scene-setting. Hope the author is inspired to write a sequel! I can't wait to read the story to my son when he is a little older!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read for my kids! 22 Nov 2009
I received a copy of this from a friend. It was a great read. The children really enjoyed all the animals and I am going to send it in to their school. Hopefully this will end up in the local library. Looking forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Monkey Magic!! 21 Mar 2010
'The Primate Puzzle' is a exhilarating story of a cereal packet competition winner and her best friend who travel to the remote tropical rainforests of south-east Asia, where they soon discover the rule of law takes second place to the rules of the jungle. Despite their young age, their humour, maturity, and fearless courage in the face of danger trigger the most exciting episode yet in their young lives.

The book's distinctive tone of ecological and zoological awareness allows kids to gain much-needed insight into important issues that are not always given the prominence they deserve in our education system. Regardless of the educational messages that are found within its pages, 'The Primate Puzzle' has all the hallmarks of a top children's novel - the book flows effortlessly from scene to scene, leaving you reluctant to put it down - you just have to keep reading to find out what happens next!

With its pulsating narrative, 'The Primate Puzzle' really fires the reader's imagination, and awakens parents and children alike to the wonders of travel to exotic destinations, leaving you longing for adventures of your own in the jungles of distant lands!

Truly inspiring and well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Primate Puzzle Thumbs Up! 19 Mar 2010
This is a really good read, it flows well, it's the perfect length and well written. It's fun, interesting and exciting for kids but cleverly gets across important messages about caring for our environment and rainforest conservation.

It even has a pretty good recipe for sticky coconut rice! Well done Oliver.

Dear Reader,
This is an exciting adventure story set in Borneo (8-16yr olds). It is educational and fun but still provides an insight into the wierd & wonderful wildlife of the area. You can feel good about buying it because the author & illustator are donating all their royalties to Great Ormond Street Hospital. All parents reading this to their children will also get involved with the characters. Will you solve The Primate Puzzle?
