Book Description

Manchester United was the first English team to make the foray into the European Cup, participating in the tournament despite the express disapproval of the Football League.

They were also the first English winners of the trophy.

Over the years, United’s European adventures have spanned tragedy – the 1958 Munich Air Disaster – and triumph – three European Cup wins – and have provided no shortage of memorable stories.

Despite United being only the eighth most successful club in the competition’s history, the United name is irrevocably linked to the European Cup.

This book explores the reasons why.

With interviews from fans, personal anecdotes and excerpts from football archives, this book looks back at the history of the club and their greatest – and worst – moments.

‘The Pride of All Europe’ celebrates Manchester United’s triumphs in European football, concentrating on ten key stories from the twenty-five seasons and six decades the club has participated in the Europe’s premier competition, interspersed with brief, first-hand fan accounts of those fabled United “Euroaways.”

In this detailed study, Andrew Kirby dissects the rich history of Manchester United in Europe.

This is the one book that every true Manchester United fan ought to read.

Andrew J Kirby’s sports writing has featured in BBC Sport magazine, and on the Radio Five Live website. He is also the author of ‘Fergie’s Finest’.

This graduate from the University of Leeds' School of English hails from the north of England and he writes fiction from the darker side of the street.

He is the multi-award-winning author of seven published novels ('The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters', 2015; 'Sharkways', 2012; 'Paint this Town Red', 2012; 'Perfect World', 2011; 'Bully', 2009; 'The Magpie Trap', 2008; 'When Elephants Walk through the Gorbals', 2007), two collections of short stories ('The Art of Ventriloquism', a collection of crime shorts, August 2012, and 'Mix Tape' 2010), ten novellas ('The Gavel', 2015; 'Hangingstone', 2014; 'Nu-Gen', 2014; 'Blink', 2013; 'Teeth', 2013; 'Shouting into an Empty Cave', 2013; 'Ace Cameron and the Red Peril', 2013; 'The Haunting of Annie Nicol', 2012; 'The Black Book', 2011; 'Call of the Sea', 2010; Bed Peace, 2010), and over sixty published short stories, which can be found widely in print anthologies, magazines and journals and across the web in zines, writing sites and more.

Anna L Stephens on 'Sharkways': "Kirby has written horror before, horror that has made me uneasy and twitchy. He's never before made me nearly bite my own tongue off in broad daylight on a crowded bus. Sharkways did. Sharkways made me want to pull my legs up onto the chair in case insects crawled out from the gloom beneath my seat and up my legs. The middle part of Sharkways stopped me sleeping."

Ginger Nuts of Horror on 'Paint this town Red': "an all action blockbuster novel of survival, that will keep you reading in the edge of your seat."

Cassandra Parkin on 'Perfect World': "From this fantastic opening, the book gallops along with the speed and dizzying swerves of a racehorse on acid."

Leeds Student Newspaper on 'Bully': "Reading this book is like trying to get to sleep after drinking too many vodka red bulls"

5.0 out of 5 stars I really loved this book - the story of my life 15 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As might be expected, I really loved this book - the story of my life. Somewhat thought-provoking to realise my first match at O.T. was 49 years ago - as described in the book - with memories of matches followed from a distance much earlier still. The book succeeds in encapsulating the hopes, dreams, disappointments and joys of so many different eras. Just the right time to re-live them! A great read for any red.
