Product Description

Review

'Lively, enhanting and deeply serious...Abounds in wonderful descriptions of her intimate relationships with plat-life, and in seascapes...Extremely funny' - Guardian. 'Hilarious, heartwarming and movingly honest. This is a book about self-exile and creation that only a poet could write' - Adam Thorpe. 'I loved the comments about English gardening as preposterous, and her ability to conjure so much out of so little without ever leaving her garden...truly wonderful' - Gerard Woodward. 'Lyrical and pithy, full of wry humour, yet weightier than most fat tomes, The Price of Water in Finistere is a book about the past and the state of the world we have created...I adored it' - Lisa Appignanesi.

The Times

"Malmsten’s humour is wry and wise, her attitudes light and liberated, her resilience though and touching."

If you love words... 24 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I found this book by coincidence. I was captured by Bodil Malmstens love of words, language and her new homeland. I read it in small dozes. I think you have to to be able to really enjoy the carefully selected words, sentences and images.... A great example of good writing.

This book was given to me as a present and I just loved it. Bodil is a middle-aged woman who packs her car and moves in disgust from her native Sweden to the very West of France. She writes sparely, like a true poet, but with great humour about gardening, her terrible French and little daily events in her new village, but at heart there is so much more. The book is shot through with outrage at the modern world, the on-going pain of losing her father, her preparations for becoming an old lady and many, many other subjects. If you like the writings of Tove Janson, you will love this. I hope many other works by Bodil will be translated into English.

Superb writing. 27 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
I adored this book. I laughed until I cried! A beautiful writer with a beautiful mind. I only wish that more of her books were translated into English from her native Swedish. I bought 3 copies so that I could give them to friends and never lend my own. Pure escapism. Suitable for gardeners, Francophiles or anyone who understands a need to express their passion in life and finally have the time to do it... if not on a budget! Buy it... buy 2!
