The powerful true story of a girl who survived horrific abuse at the hands of a cold-blooded monster and who found the strength to escape and turn her life around.

Book Description

The Price of Love is the heart-rending story of a young girl who, against all the odds, survived terrifying abuse with her spirit intact. Nikola was sexually assaulted and raped as a girl, her disturbed behaviour and emotional cries for help ignored by the adults around her. Her self esteem at rock bottom, she fell prey to a frightening stranger, a man who would turn her life into a living nightmare. He was handsome and charming and she was too young to see the warning signs. She married him while in her teens. The abuse started on the first night of their honeymoon. Over the next few years she was kept a prisoner, sexually abused, subject to horrific beatings, tormented by her husband who insisted he was only doing this because he loved her. And again, those who should have helped her refused to believe that she was telling the truth. When her husband told her, with a chilling lack of emotion, that he was going to kill her Nikola found the courage to run away and fight to be free of him. Eventually she turned her life around, and today works as a therapist helping others. Written without self-pity, this is a compelling and ultimately inspiring book.

DISTURBING READ 2 April 2007
Format:Hardcover
Truly disturbing read by Nikola T. James. The author tells her biography in all its horrendous detail, married to a very sexually abusive and controlling man it is a wonder that Nikola survived this experience.

This book is not for the fainthearted, it is sexually graphic and very disturbing. However, Nikola wants to bring to the reader's attention the fact that abuse of this kind is regularly going on and hopes her book will give women the courage to speak out and get help.

It is hard to believe that Nikola is now counselling other victims of domestic violence. The last chapter really does delve into the mind of the abused person and the reasons why an abused person stays in a violent relationship.

Although the the content of the book is upsetting it is a good read and it is important that the author shows the reader the true picture of abuse. It is well written and easy to read.

Nikola deserves the recognition this book will bring her and I am amazed that she found the courage to be able to write about all her terrible memories.

The Price of Love 28 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as soon as it came out and read it in under 3 hours. I couldn't believe how someone's body could endure all this poor girl's did. I have read several books in the past on this subject but this one moved and shocked me very deeply - more than all the rest. I was really appalled by the sexual violence and degrading force of it all. I wish you all the luck Nikola - you definitely deserve it and thanks for sharing your story with us.

Almost unbelievable 27 April 2007
Format:Hardcover
I hope this book helps women who stay in abusive relationships to have the strength and self-respect to leave their partner. Nikola was with this particularly evil bully for fifteen months or so and managed to escape - I was surprised that he didn't come looking for her as most men of this type treat the woman in question as their "property" and do not give up so easily. Apparently after she left him he made absolutely no attempt to contact her whatsoever. My only criticism of this book is that Nikola fails to "set the scene" in that, for example, there is absolutely no indication as to the area where she was brought up (and the first part of the book focusses mainly on her upbringing), except to say that her grandmother had a Lancashire accent. Then she tells us about working in a "seaside town" in the UK but again doesn't elaborate as to the area. Later in the book she briefly goes into a period when she lived with her present husband in the Middle East but doesn't say whereabouts that was. Perhaps Nikola had a reason for not disclosing these details but when one takes into consideration that all these events took place mainly in the 1950s and 1960s I don't see the necessity for omitting such information.
