"THE PRAYER BOX is Masterpiece of story and skill." -- NYT #1 Bestselling Author Debbie Macomber
When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out Iola's rambling Victorian house.

Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola's walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, spanning from Iola's youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper--the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything for Tandi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valued by the Lord 14 May 2014
By Iola
Format:Kindle Edition
Tandi Reese has escaped with her two children to Fairhope, a small village in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She’s broke, trying to escape her controlling husband and hopefully find herself and reconnect with her children, Zoey and JT. She rents a cottage on the grounds of a run-down stately home, owned by a reclusive old lady, Iola Anne Poole.

Soon after moving in, she finds Iola Anne dead, and is given the job of clearing the house in exchange for rent. While cleaning, she finds dozens of prayer boxes filled with letters, prayers from Iola Anne to her heavenly father, in which she has poured out the details of her life.

I will admit I didn’t actually buy this novel based on the cover blurb. I bought it because it had a character named Iola (even though Iola is dead by the time the novel starts). Iola isn’t exactly a common name, and I was intrigued.

My curiosity was rewarded: The Prayer Box was certainly worth reading. It’s been nominated for the 2014 Christy Awards in the Contemporary Fiction category, and it has to be a strong contender. The plot is tightly-woven, the characters are real and interesting, and the writing is excellent.

While this novel is written by a Christian author and published by a Christian publisher, it’s not preachy come-to-Jesus Christian fiction, but the nature and theme of the novel—prayer—is certainly Christian. The Prayer Box about a broken woman with a life full of mistakes trying to rediscover herself, slowly realising that her identity is about her, not about her boyfriend or husband:

I wasn’t looking for Iola in these boxes. I was looking for myself, for the answer to the question I’d be asking and avoiding for years. How do you finally move beyond the past?

4.0 out of 5 stars Faithful love 16 Jun. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tandi runs away from a drug-filled abusive relationship with her two children and arrives in the seaside community of Hettera she knew as a child. Soon after she arrives her landlady dies and she is given the task of sorting out the large house.

This is a beautiful book about a damaged individual growing into a self-confident one with the help of a loving local community who take her in without judging her. Most of all though she learns about the life of Iola her landlady through the prayers she left behind.

It shows how we are all valued and loved by God and that He is a God of seconc chances even when we mess up.

I did find it a little long at times and the end was somewhat abrupt but overall a good read

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story 9 Sept. 2014
By Fiona P
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a wonderful story, a young mother runs from her abusive husband with her stroppy teenage daughter and her young son, she doesn't know how she will support them and herself. She finds a welcome in the small town and is able to find work, she learns through the letters of an old lady who has recently died that she is loved and valued, and she gradually learns to make better choices for herself and her family.
Yes this is a romance, but that takes a lesser role in the story which focusses instead on friendship, mutual support and the story of Iola who was an unseen influence for good in the town and indeed in Tandi's life. It is not at all a preachy book and I recommend it highly.

I loved this book. being a lisa Jewell fan I felt this book was along the same lines and how right I was. a small town, a woman trying to make a new life and the death of a neighbour start you on a journey. tandi is asked to clear out an old house and comes across the prayer boxes of the deceased owner. please read this book as it will show everything happens for a reason. just because you don't recall some of your past does not mean others are not asking for your future.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Prayer Box. Inspirational! 20 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great story. I shall be looking out for more of Lisa Wingate's stories. I had great difficulty putting it down once I started it. I would recommend it highly as suitable for all age groups. Like all good books I will be returning to it again in the future. It is well written, the story flows well, the characters are credible and it keeps your interest right up to the last page. God bless you.

This book caught my imagination straight away. As recent bad weather and storms are in the news, it seemed the perfect backdrop to Lisa Wingate's book. The characters were believable and vivid in my mind. It was difficult to put it down!! I loved it and can't wait for her next book!!

A wonderful story, could not put it down. I found myself wishing the character, Tandi, to find herself. There are moments when you can identify with Tandi and understand the emotions she goes through. A very heartwarming book. I look forward to reading more
