4.0 out of 5 stars very good but.... 1 Feb 2007
Format:Audio CD
being over 40 and just having heard this on R1 I was amazed at how similar this is to the (under-rated) sound of the Comsat Angels circa 81/82. Also agree with the consensus that they sound just like early XTC/Gang of Four. Having heard some guy from the Klaxons bigging up John Foxx I guess the (obscure) early eighties are back in vogue!!! Or more likely the current crop of new bands are composed of the offspring or nieces and nephews of early-80's musos.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gods Have Answered 17 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is the most innovative song I have ever heard. Imagine how brave Bloc Party were to build up a huge following based on their distinctive sound, and then go a totally different way on their first single from their new album, A Weekend In The City, out on February 5th. Given the huge risk, this gamble has played off perfectly, over a week (maybe more)at the top of the NME chart show is testimony to that.

It is a foot stomping, emotion fuelled song about going to a club and dancing, and feeling part of it, rounded off with an anthemic chorus. I would agree that it takes a bit of getting used to, and it grows on your hugely, I doubt you will love it first time round, but it is an absolutely fantastic single, worth of anyone's money. It is so amazing - everybody I know has fallen in love with it completely.

Also... Amazon is wrong, there are two more songs on the single, "We Were Lovers" , and "The Prayer [Phones Metal Jackin' Mix]" , making the package even more worthwhile :D "We were lovers" isn't half bad either, and was actually one of the songs I was most looking forward to hearing on AWITC, but it has been pulled from the album, and put on here instead.

If you have any good musical taste , you must buy this song.

3.0 out of 5 stars deja vu 22 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
Quite a brave record in the overall sceme of things. They sound if they are trying to do something slightly different, as opposed to going through the motions. But however hard Bloc Party try, they still sound like 1981. It is just in their system and they may always sound like they are just stuck in that era for the rest of their career. This track sounds very much like 'Concorde Square' by Crispy Ambulance [minus the seven minutes of feedback], which, you've guessed it. was recorded in 1981...

So if you want innovation, forget it. But if you are not so fussy and like music that is stylistically 25 years out of date, that you can do a whole lot worse than this. At least the boys are making an effort - and there isn't many bands around at the moment who are.
