Product Description

Review

"It is a gift for busy teachers - the inherently interesting topics
(gender, race, consumerism, miscarriage of justice, etc.) will
stimulate lively classroom discussion whatever the student mix, and at
the end of each chapter there are plenty of suggested activities for
use in class or as homework assignments.

This book may change your life!"

Format: Paperback
Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a relatively new field of study but one which has huge relevance to everyday life, revealing how texts can reflect underlying attitudes and prejudices, and also their potential to influence and mislead. This highly readable introduction to the field provides the basic analytical tools to discover the power of CDA and aid resistance to the pressure of advertising, propaganda and 'spin'. Current CDA methodologies are clearly explained and illustrated through the practical examination of texts (from sources such as the media, marketing and government agencies). Scholarly references provide additional sustenance, and make the book a suitable choice not only for A level and undergraduate readers, but also for academics and researchers new to CDA.

I would recommend this book for private reading and as a set text on any course which examines the use of language in social contexts. It is a gift for busy teachers - the inherently interesting topics (gender, race, consumerism, miscarriage of justice, etc.) will stimulate lively classroom discussion whatever the student mix, and at the end of each chapter there are plenty of suggested activities for use in class or as homework assignments.

This book may change your life!
