Product Description

Synopsis

This is an unprecedented work in which renowned astrologer James Braha demonstrates the need for synergy between Hindu astrological theory and actual experience. Its purpose is to provide students with the knowledge necessary to gain a quantum leap in predictive accuracy. As an experience-first astrologer who accepts no astrological technique blindly, the author has thoroughly tested the fundamental techniques of this system. Page after page, techniques that work powerfully are distinguished from those that are mediocre, inconsistent, or unreliable. Although originally designed for intermediate and advanced students, beginners who study an introductory chapter can easily follow this lucid text, saving years of frustration and confusion. Over fifty horoscope examples are included as well as numerous lists demonstrating how to prioritise the myriad positive and negative aspects of analysis that challenge every Hindu astrologer. If you want to be the most accurate predictive astrologer possible, this brilliantly conceived book is for you. Enjoy!

James Braha was and remains the one who made hindu astrology readable to us westerners (most books written by hindus are unfortunately not readable - I have tried quite a few). I have read all Braha's books on the subject matter and I feel fortunate for having done so. This particular book is not only a concise and distiled version of Braha's experience with the hindu system, it is crucially a non-dogmatic approach, which leaves the reader to be the final judge. This is not a book for a begginer and I would recommend reading the other Braha's book first (Ancient Hindu Astrology...). We are indeed very fortunate that Braha has published this particular book (and the earlier ones), because otherwise the hindu system would have needed at least another 20-30 years in order to be introduced in the west (recently there have been several interesting book attempts by westerners). Additionally, it is a bonus that Braha uses an inquisitive approach without demeaning nor glorifying the hindu system (which by the way is not unique in its dasha-bukti technique approach - the greek astrology of the hellinistic age had a similar system with the time-lords or chronocrators). In conclusion: if you wish to truly learn and understand the intricacies of the hindu astrological system, then you should read and re-read this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars An Experienced Hindu Astrologer's opinion 28 Oct 2003
Format:Hardcover
It is laudable that Mr. James Braha, an American, has evinced tremendous interest in Hindu Astrology, pursued it vigorously, authored some products on it and probably made it a fetching profession. But what I do not fail to notice is that he has evidently applied western thinking in interpreting the hindu classical wisdom. The Hindu Astrology has its own nuances and technical know-how for the zodaical interpretation and Hindu directional astrology(Dasa-Bhukti system) is unique. His rejection of the concepts of Vargottama and Neechabhanga is absurd when he is attempting to interpret the hindu zodiac with the hindu way of delianation. Similarly his interpretaion of the effects of retrograde planets is contrary to the hindu conception of these planets. His statement that a planet in retrogression is closer to the earth is erroneous since every planet has its own fixed orbit whether in forward motion or retrogression and it can never deviate from its orbit. Likewise his emphasis on the aspects in determining the strength of planets is against the shad-bala principle as laid down in Hindu Astrology. The aspects will have an impact on the chemistry of the planets with reference to the esoteric influence of the sign of their placement and can never destroy or alter the shad-bala strength. Thus his assertions lack validity and are against precepts and postulates of Hindu Astrology. He will do well to follow Hindu Astrology the way the Hindu classical texts explain. Any attemt to westernise the Hindu Astrology will undoubtedly tantamount to unfailing distortion. Hindu Astrology is complex and complicated and calls for a deep consideration of all the concurrent and concomitent factors in arriving at a viable conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hindu Astrology Masterpiece 16 May 2002
By David Goldstein, Ph.D. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This latest text on Hindu Astrology by James Braha is absolutely outstanding and it is a "must-have" book for every person studying or practicing Vedic Astrology. Do yourself a huge favor, don't think twice. Go out and buy this book while you still can, since Vedic Astrology books tend to go out of print very quickly. Out of Braha's five Hindu astrology books, this is definitely his best because he delivers the results of his 20 years EXPERIENCE as a practicing astrologer.
Braha's new text is jammed-packed with so much great information, you will read it many times over and learn something new each time you pick it up. If you want to truly learn how to interpret Vedic astrological charts, Braha's latest book is made for you! Whether you are a beginner or advanced student of the subject, this book covers the entire spectrum of information. This book will help you clarify many confusing areas of chart interpretation and it is written so clearly and logically. In this book, Braha uses a smooth, easy-to-follow conversational, tutorial style of writing which is similar to Steve Arroyo's (western astrologer) writing style. Best of all, it is written in plain, easy to understand language. You can immediately apply the information to chart interpretation and get accurate results.
In this one masterpiece, Braha manages to cover how to analyze all of the major areas of the chart including: health, mental & emotional status, relationship, marriage, spirituality, career, finance and rises and falls in life. He uses many chart examples to make all of his points understood. No other Hindu astrology textbook goes into as much detail on all of these areas as this one book does. Moreover, he specifically explains how to deal with conflicting or confusing points in the chart, such as: mixed effects of planets (benefic and malefic influences), how to interpret yogas or planetary combinations, how to view retrograde, stationary- direct and combust planets, the specific differences between conjunctions vs. planets throwing aspects, consideration of orbs (even in Vedic chart analysis) among another 1000 other important topics.
If you are new to the subject, Braha has a wonderful section which clearly goes into the basics of Vedic Astrology, and if you have been at it a few years, this section provides a great review of critical points. Some of the best parts of the book are his specific lists which describe exactly: what makes a chart strong vs. weak, how to prioritize positive and negative planetary positions, and what makes a house strong vs.weak. He also has specific lists for determining career, health and spiritual direction.
Braha's latest book is by far one of the most important, well-written, clear and very detailed text books on Hindu Astrology written to date. Another title for the book could be "1001 Questions about Hindu Astrology you were afraid to ask." Well here are the answers!! Buy this book before they run out!!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent 31 Aug 2003
By Enzo Barillà - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
James Braha has written a book unique in its kind: it allows you to escape from the confusing mass of contradictory jyotish literature in order to focus in the fundamentals, tested again and again by the author in over 20 years practice. If you want to start doing good hindu charts readings, you must have this book. I have been studying jyotish for a long time but until now I just could not manage to get started in my practice. I felt that something was missing until I read Braha's book. Now I can finally get going, thanks to this generous author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Information 25 Jan 2004
By Dean Baylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I learned more astrology (Eastern or Western) from this
book than from any other previous source. One can read all of
the cookbook information available in textbooks and still not
get the real essence and flavor of a well-done reading. In this book, James Braha uses the Guru/Chela relationship as the
format for nine chapters of instruction in properly delineating
Hindu horoscopes. The lessons are delivered in a conversational manner that is not only understandable and
informative, but actually fun to read. I highly recommend this
book to all students of astrology.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant book by an excellent and generous astrologer 13 Sep 2007
By Manoj Chandran - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I am a beginner in learning Vedic astrology. After reading through the great classics (including the excellent beginners book by the same author) and after going through an excellent online course by the dirah academy, I still felt the need for one on one lessons from an experienced astrologer. Well I could not afford one, but this book comes very close to being almost as good. Whether you are a beginner, or experienced astrologer, you will enjoy and learn immensly from this book. I was especially impressed by the author's honesty in dealing with conterversial areas like Neechabanga and Vargottama. From the charts I have analyzed since reading this book (including my own chart) I have to agree that this author has a good point. If you want REAL, PRACTICAL and BRILLIANT advice on how to interpret charts based on practical experience and not just thoeritical knowledge, buy this book. It is too bad James Braha is not still practicing astrology. However, for any one interested, DR.David Goldstein, the first reviewer of this book, is a brilliant astrologer himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like being in a face-to-face discussion 2 July 2013
By Ms. Jess - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I had several "very basic" introductory astrology books. While some of them did give a generic overview of the basic astrological concepts, I found many of them lacking because they pretty much glossed over the astrological points. For instance, none of them really explained how or why (or even that) the first house is generally the most important in a horoscope. Page 17 of this book explains why it is the most important house ("...it is the essence, or nucleus, of the chart. If [what] we're looking at was the horoscope of a human, the 1st house would tell us specifically about the person--the body, the appearance, etc."). This mention was made within the context of the muhurta, the electional chart for this book project. The author makes a very succinct yet detailed delineation / analysis of how he chose a favorable date with which to start off THE ART AND PRACTICE. This is, of course, just only part of the beginning of the book!

I have not seen such "secrets" divulged in many other astrology books. In fact, the 5 or so pages in the introduction contain more substance than the full text of some of the more "ordinary" types of introductory astrology books. I understand why the title of the book contains the word, "intimate" (full title = "The Art and Practice of Ancient Hindu Astrology: Nine Intimate Sessions Between Teacher and Student")--reading the book really makes you feel like you are the student in the presence of a wise, renowned astrologer who is caring and respectful of others. Definitely one of the publications I am most happy and proud to have as part of my astrology books collection.
