Review

"The Practical Zone System is one of the easier books to understand on the zone system for better black-and-white photographs...It takes the complex issues of the zone system and removes the calculations and just gives you what you need to know." - The Midwest Book Review

Product Description

The subject of the zone system is now very much in the mainstream among amateur as well as professional photographers. This newly revised edition of a photography classic teaches photographers how to recognize the zones both on the print and in the field or studio, to pre-visualize their photograph and expose accordingly, to access their prints and negatives for contrast, and to test equipment for reliable results. This book has been updated to include information on the latest developers and films. New illustrations have been added to reflect the most contemporary photographic styles, and information on digital imaging supplied in the second edition has been expanded into a new chapter. The practical approach of this book, with its numerous time-saving development and film charts and easy-to-follow testing methods, is an important resource for the beginning, large-format, 35mm, and professional photographer.

This book's covers contain the most understandable and usable description of the Zone System of exposure I have ever read. Instead of long complicated and often unintelligable explanations of theory, this book is written by an experienced user and teacher of the system. Chris Johnson explains the way he uses it and illustrates clearly the concepts and the zones with actual photographs as well as diagrams and graphs.

Mr. Johnson spells out clearly the way to pre visualise a scene and break it down into the tonal ranges that constitute each zone, he also goes on to show how to calibrate your camera, film, developer and paper as well as discussing the use of the Zone System with both colour film and digital capture.

I strongly recommend this book to all photography students and to anyone who wants to guarantee correctly exposed and textured images.

Well done! 22 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This book is written to be understood. It does not spend pages to explain why the zone system works, but rather how it works.
I'm not a native english speaker, and I'm only an amateur photograph - not an art student. Guess what? I have understood what Chris Johnson has described.
Now it's up to me to practice.

Just thought this was one of the best instructional books, when learning light and how to understand and control it.
