Book Description

29 Jun 2005 0321333497 978-0321333490 1
Based on the premise that all writing involves arguing a thesis, this classic, authoritative rhetoric presents the essential tools for writing graceful, persuasive essays. Emphasizing thesis and the structural integrity of the essay, The Practical Stylist provides a variety of organizational techniques to help students create sound essays, while the expository modes such as description, narration, and exposition are presented as strategies for supporting a thesis. Numerous essay models are provided to illustrate the principles of organization and explore the dynamics of language. A research paper chapter discusses online sources and the computerized library, and a brief handbook section provides help with grammar issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars A firm foundation for writing 28 Feb 2007
By Jonathan D. Osborn - Published on Amazon.com
When I was in college, I kept a copy of the Practical Stylist at my desk wheneven I wrote term papers. It became a ritual for me to reread the chapters on correcting bad sentences and writing good sentences. Between this book and his assemblage of modern essays, The Essayist, Baker gave me a sense of what good writing looked like and sounded like.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a grammar, an aid in how to think and write. 25 July 2012
By Meggy - Published on Amazon.com
I taught Freshman English for 29 years and used Sheridan Baker's The Practical Stylist. Baker's book is a succinct and correct introduction to the thesis and fundamentals of logic. Today's writers and speakers have a poor grasp on fundamentals of language. They are no longer able to think clearly as a result. Thus, many are putty in the hands of propagandists, politicians and other abusers of language who nonetheless impact the way we think and the way we fail to reason. This little primer is a good first start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to write 23 Feb 2008
By D. Doctor - Published on Amazon.com

He is such a good writer. She is such a good writer. Were they born that way? Maybe. Could they have learned to write well? Definitely. And you can too. Pick up a copy of this book and learn fundamental writing lessons. I had complained to co-workers that I overuse "which." There's a section in this book about that problem. So buy it, and become a good writer. Soon everyone will say, "You're such a good writer."
