The Power of Scrum tells the inspiring story of Mark Resting, CTO of a software company struggling with a major client and a project with more problems than solutions and a marriage in crisis. But, when he meets Jerry, a West-coast expert in Scrum, light at the end of the tunnel begins to appear, Mark begins to reluctantly hope things will work out. The road is bumpy, but Jerry skillfully brings Mark's developers from a world of project crisis into a revolutionary approach that can save the day. Authors Jeff Sutherland, Rini van Solinger, and Eelco Rustenburg have written a fictional narrative that masterfully weaves a compelling human story around the teaching moments of a software, project management how-to, and in the process tell an engaging story of personal growth and triumph, while demonstrating the power of a revolutionary and mission-critical approach to project management. The Power of Scrum is a must read for project managers, software developers, and product developers, as well as for anyone who loves a great story well told.
Very good introduction to Scrum, in just 80 pages or so. The use of Scrum is explained in a story about a software COO running a project using a waterfall method, which has lead them into big problems with an important customer. For me the story was recognizable and entertaining. After reading I feel really enthusiastic about Agile methods: don't fight changing expectations and specifications, but accept them and change the way you work.

Jeff, has written a great, short, to-the-point book about how to move a project to agile. The book is short n sweet but delivers its message quite well. The story is engaging and the character build up is fine.
This is a great book. If you are thinking of starting an agile journey, do yourself a favor and get this book as the starting point. You will not be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent book on the use of Scrum26 Jan 2012

Jeff's book delivers a narrative of a CTO who just "lied" to his biggest customer and the fear that sets in. Follows him on his discovery of Scrum, installation into his company and the insights he gets as Scrum takes hold. This is an excellent book for beginners and for those who are in similar situations looking for something that may work. We can relate to the CTO because most SW development managers and project managers have been there. Jeff not only describes the mechanics of Scrum but also the philosophy behind it. This is a good illustration of how an organization can turn a development process that is unpredictable, error-prone, and sometimes oppressive into one of empowerment, transparency, and responsive to customer needs.
I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat introduction to SCRUM25 Jan 2012

I really enjoyed Jeff's "Power Of Scrum" for its practical approach to introducing Scrum. I like how the book addresses not just what Scrum is but how it gets introduced.
Written as a story, the "power of scrum" provides a fun read while going through the main concepts of Scrum. I thought that using a story line and also a practical view of implementing Scrum were both unique to this book which makes it great.
The book is aimed primarily at beginner and early intermediate of Scrum.
