Product Description

Review

First published by the Royal Opera House in 2007, The Power of the Ring is now reissued in softback...Kahn's authoritative account of the immense task of devising, designing, staging and performing the Ring is a welcome follow-up to John Snelson s Illustrated History of Wagner's Ring at Covent Garden...Both books are indispensable documents of the history of this work. -- Wagner News (Book Review), David Edwards

Those seeking further enlightenment should pick up Gary Kahn's newly paperbacked The Power of the Ring, with extended interviews. It's worth the effort: when intellect and emotions are fully engaged like this, the results are exhilarating. -- The Evening Standard, Barry Millington

In an interesting note in the vast programme book, amplified in The Power of the Ring, the book by Gary Kahn (which contains many interviews with everyone involved in the projects, and is brilliantly illustrated by Clive Barda), Keith Warner compares Wagner with Ibsen. -- The Spectator, Michael Tanner

Anyone wanting to see the director's point of view - motivated by Wagner's position in the maelstrom of 19th-century thought - should consult the Royal Opera's handsome book The Power of the Ring, edited by Gary Kahn and reissued for this revival. -- Sunday Telegraph, John Allison

To see how a Ring Cycle evolves, turn to Gary Kahn's exhaustive interview-based book The Power of the Ring, just out in paperback. --The Observer, Fiona Maddocks

I'm going to the Royal Opera House production of the Ring Cycle starting tonight and bought this rather expensive paperback to get some background. First of all you need to have a very thorough knowledge of the Ring cycle to make sense of this book. Many the reviews of the production have said it is overloaded with ideas and reading the interview with Keith Warner the Director you get the same feeling. There were some paragraphs where I had no clear idea what he was getting at. The design of the book , reissued from 2007,now feels very dated. It is frustrating that most of the photographs are not captioned so we don't know what they represent, who is in them, how they are linked to the text etc. I spotted a couple of typos, inexcusable in a re-issue. I think I would have been better advised to simply buy the programme on the night and read the Michael Tanner biography of Wagner instead.
