I am in Year 11 doing GCSE RS full course, and my RS teacher recently showed us this film. It was amazing- the story of a white English boy in South Africa having to deal with great hardships from a very young age- including both his parents dying and suffering racial abuse from both black South Africans and the white Afrikaaners. We follow PK from the time of his birth until the age of 18, and during that time the ordeals he has to go through are almost unimaginable, but these things really happened in South Africa and it raises awareness and empathy by showing us these things uncensored. This film is the most horrible, beautiful and incredible film I have ever seen.

Having never read the book an am saved from being disappointed. The film portrays the ploblems with living as a young white boy in South Africa. PK suffers terrible losses and beatings throughout his youth, and it is only when he is taken in by a man who can teach him the joys in life, that he starts to stand up for himself. Many issues of race are brought up and dealt very adequently. The end scene is one that brings all your feelings for young PK to a peak.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT MOVIE ABOUT THE UNREST IN SOUTH AFRICA IN THE 1930`S AND OF A BOY, WHO WHEN HE BECOMES A MAN, MAKES AN ATTEMPT TO CHANGE IT ALL.
IN MOST PARTS THE MOVIE IS QUITE VIOLENT, WHICH BRINGS IT ALL HOME TO THE VIEWER, JUST WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO LIVE THROUGH IT ALL!

Extremely moving
Not as good as the book but still a powerful and emotional film which captures the harsh reality of how the native Africans were treated. I recommend this to anyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Although it differs from the book, which I also enjoyed immensely, I thought it brought across the main themes very well. Read more

A word of advice - get the book instead!
Having read Bryce Courtenay's bestseller and been wowed by it I was eager to watch the film. I wish I hadn't bothered. Read more
