Modern and easy to follow 13 Sept. 2010
By Kerrald - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Full disclosure: I haven't yet finished reading this entirely. That said, I've found this to be a wonderful and thorough introduction to philosophical logic. The text is clearly written, with numerous helpful, and humorous examples (referencing everything from politics, to Harry Potter, and even Homestar Runner). While logic may sound like an incredibly dry topic, the authors have managed to maintain and even pique my interest with their modern writing style and layout. I would highly recommend this text book.

Edit 01/25/11: This book was thoroughly fantastic. It proved to be very easy to reference, concepts were explained in a form that was easy to grasp. The author uses great examples (as I previously mentioned), and over all this is just a great text book. If only other texts were as well written.

A good college-level logic text 14 Oct. 2014
By Doug Erlandson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Having taught logic for the better part of twenty years, I will say categorically that "The Power of Logic" is one of the better college-level logic texts. It is relatively complete and covers the range of topics from informal fallacies and categorical syllogisms to propositional logic, predicate logic, induction, and probability. All of these topics are discussed in an easy-to-understand style and the book provides many examples and exercises to help the student in grasping the material. An answer key at the back of the book provides the correct responses to selected exercise items.

This book is quite similar in what it covers and in its approach to Patrick Hurley's "A Concise Introduction to Logic." Most of the divergences between the two texts are relatively minor.
I used to tutor propositional logic out of this book 8 Jun. 2014

I worked at a university and tutored propositional logic out of this textbook. It is very thorough, although there are cases when it can be frustrating to work out of. This is one of the better logic textbooks I have used, but their attempt to standardize diagrams is somewhat counter-intuitive. If you have a professor that wants you to do it the book's way only, there are other books that don't use such odd methods. Notwithstanding, there are cases where the assignments in the book encourages students to switch statements in a manner where they lose validity when you don't necessarily have to. It is the case that you sometimes have to do this, but the book's assignments include switching statements so that they do not retain validity when it isn't absolutely necessary. For this reason some of the professors at my university discontinued the use of this textbook.

power of logic 24 Nov. 2012

The content is really well done, and the quizzes are a useful measuring tool of progress. That being said, I am not the biggest fan of its organization. Regardless of this one little fact, I am really pleased with the product.

Incredible textbook for learning the art of logic. It is the most helpful set of skills I have learned thus far in college, and it helps to strengthen the way you think and speak.
