The updated version of our comprehensive dictionary, covering all the terminology, materials and techniques for potters. It clearly and logically presents the potter with information on everything; the sources and character of materials, the behaviour of clays and glazes, forming methods and firing processes. This new edition covers recent developments, expands on previous subjects, and brings old entries up to date. New colour sections cover raku, maiolica, crystalline glazes, salt and soda, stoneware and porcelain, including graphs and diagrams where helpful. 5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for potters 12 Jan 2010
Indispensible for all potters. Like most artists, potters and ceramicists work alone, so where do you go for help when you have a problem. This book can provide most solutions. Fascinating just to dip into, every time I do, it confirms my ignorance of the craft.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... while pursuing my MA in ceramics and have subsequently recommended to anyone interested in ceramics 8 July 2014
By flicka - Published on Amazon.com
I first came across this book while pursuing my MA in ceramics and have subsequently recommended to anyone interested in ceramics. Yes, as another reviewer points out there are mistakes, but overall it is informative and well-organized. What I like most about this book is that it 'grows' with the artist; the basics are there for the beginners, but the technical information is there for those wishing to delve deeper and broaden their technical knowledge. A must have for anyone and everyone with an interest in ceramics.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference material 28 May 2014

Well organized and cross referenced. One is able to find answers to technical questions and is directed to other pertinent information. It is not a techniques book, but rather a technical source material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, but not infallible 2 Oct 2007
By Timothy J. Joko-Veltman - Published on Amazon.com
This really is an indispensable book for anyone seriously interested in pottery as an art or profession. It contains lots of great information. It also contains some errors, most of which are little. Also, the rendition of the Chinese character for "raku" is ugly and missing a stroke. The title says this is a dictionary of materials and techniques - but it's more than that. It can serve as a jargon glossary, too. Also, some articles seem more concerned about meaning and interpretation and make practically no mention of materials or technique, and in the case of the "Teapots" entry, I thought it culturally-biased and incomplete. That said, get it anyway, this book is a must-have.
