I have to plead ignorance in that I had never heard of Bryce Courtenay before picking up this book. But having read The Potato Factory I cannot wait to pick up another book by him. You cannot help but feel for the Fagin like Ikey Solomon even though most of his troubles are self inflicted. And every time I read about Marys troublesome hands my joints started to ache as if in sympathy. From the very first chapter set in the dark and sinister backstreets of London to the emerging city of hobart Town the writing is wonderfully descriptive. I read The Potato Factory over a month ago now and still keep wondering how Tommo and Hawk are getting along.

This book has a slow start. But after approximately 100 pages, it becomes absolutley fascinating. And particularly from a woman's point of view, one can only admire Mary's determination to succeed in life. Not only that, where she gets the strength from to continue to see the good things in people is beyond me. I can highly recommend this book as it is a real eye opener of our past (which is not that long ago after all) and what human beings are capable of.

Billing address 31 May 2011
By Helen
Format:Paperback
I was given the option to have a different billing address to the mailing address and as this was a present for my Mum I asked for the invoice to be sent to me and the book to her.

BOTH were sent to her and I was not happy as she was furious I had spent so much on a paperback book.

Fantastic!
Bryce Courtenay is one hell of a story teller, this book being the first of the trilogy - leaves you in awe and bewilderment. You won't be able to put it down.

Which is great because I really enjoyed this one. This is a great insight into some of the history of England and Australia. Read more

The Potato Factory
It was a good read. A few things that I have to say. Firstly, it is difficult sometimes to relate to the central character as Ikey Solomon is in many ways simply a dodgy thief -... Read more

A good book, but not his best.
While "The Potato Factory" is a pretty good book, it is certainly not on par with "The Power of One". Read more
