Product Description

Review

'Sympathetic, perceptive, lively and full of information.' - Times Literary Supplement. 'Anyone thinking of offering Portugal as a subject for Mastermind should certainly start here. I learned a lot from the book, and imagine that most readers, Portuguese and foreign alike, would do so too... What comes through very clearly is the author's infectious enthusiasm for her subject and her lively, good-humoured and inquisitive mind.' Cultura.

Product Description

First published in 1991, this lively travel companion is brought up-to-date here in a new revised edition with additional chapters. "The Portuguese: The Land and its People" contains a fascinating guide to Portugal's rich and turbulent history: one of Romans and Moors, of the age of exploration, of exotic kings and queens, and of the revolution of 1974. The book features maps, illustrations and photographs, a detailed chronology and an invaluable, fully up-dated chapter of practical travel advice for visitors to Portugal.

I found this book well structured, informative and enjoyable being a nice mix of fact and narrative. This makes the book very readable and useful to anyone going to Portugal for a holiday or more permanently.A small irritation is the authors regular habit of using English/England where Britain/British would be accurate eg in touching on the Iberian Peninsular War.I trust her information on Portuguese history is better than her apparent knowledge of British history.Without this criticism I would have given the book five stars.

Weird. Whereas Spain receives abundant attention in English language, Portugal appears and continues to be almost forgotten. There are two thin books about its general history, and some more extensive ones about its glorious past but that's about it. Marion Kaplan deserves the honour of having written the only contemporary overview of Portugal in all its aspects. "The Portuguese..." is a good read, well-structured and honest. The author has attempted to cover everything and generally successfully. One cannot blame her that the book shows some weaknesses here and there, for example where Portuguese architecture is being described: an uninspiring list. Nevertheless, 320 out of 340 pages are quite well readable and highly informative. It is certainly the best of its kind but that would also be true if it were of less quality. "In the land of the blind, etc." No, truly, I often reread chapters and I am very glad the book exists.
Note: don't let yourself distract by its 'travel guide'-like cover and title - it is much more comprehensive than that. Highly recommended!

Felt ripped off 3 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
This book was originally published in 1991, and although it claims to have been updated since, it's showing its age badly in too many places. In a relatively rapidly developing country like Portugal, an awful lot changes in two decades. What doesn't change is the history, which the author goes back to again and again. And again.

If you're looking for a contemporary book on Portugal in the 21st Century, then please don't buy this. If you're studying the Portugal of 20 years ago, however, then this might be the book for you.
