Weird. Whereas Spain receives abundant attention in English language, Portugal appears and continues to be almost forgotten. There are two thin books about its general history, and some more extensive ones about its glorious past but that's about it. Marion Kaplan deserves the honour of having written the only contemporary overview of Portugal in all its aspects. "The Portuguese..." is a good read, well-structured and honest. The author has attempted to cover everything and generally successfully. One cannot blame her that the book shows some weaknesses here and there, for example where Portuguese architecture is being described: an uninspiring list. Nevertheless, 320 out of 340 pages are quite well readable and highly informative. It is certainly the best of its kind but that would also be true if it were of less quality. "In the land of the blind, etc." No, truly, I often reread chapters and I am very glad the book exists.
Note: don't let yourself distract by its 'travel guide'-like cover and title - it is much more comprehensive than that. Highly recommended!
