About the Author
Jurgen Barth spent his entire career at Porsche. At the end of 2006 Barth retired from Porsche as director of the customer motorsports department. He continues to work on Porsche's behalf as racing director of the German Porsche Sports Cup, and assists the FIA in homologation matters involving historic Porsche race cars. Gustav Busing, born in 1944, was sports editor of the German trade journal, Auto Zeitung, before he and Lothar Boschen struck out on their own as freelance journalists and authors.

These three volumes are remarkably comprehensive and deserve credit for that. There are problems, though. Originally written in German, it has been translated into American. You soon get used to the liters and the fact that a hood is not what you first thought. There are some curious turns of phrase, particularly amongst the technical expressions. Also, there are lots of adjectival nouns. A pet hate. Nevertheless, it is easy to read.
One of the two authors, Jurgen Barth, is a Porsche man. Maybe that is why the whole work reads like a publicity brochure. A little light criticsm of earlier models is allowed. For example the 912 (1966 - 1968) "was never a car to which superlatives could apply". Description of current cars is the company's line. I havn't found any juicy little titbits of gossip either.
I guess, partly because of its price, this work will be bought only by those with a special interest. They will be pleased to have it but, like me, will wish for a little more.

The Porsche Book: The Complete History of Types and Models is a 3-volume set in a slipcase packed with over two thousand black and white and color photos and nearly a hundred illustrations. It comes from a Porsche insider and Le Mans winner and provides the definitive technical history of the car and its designs. It originally appeared in 1977 but this first English-language edition in decades will appeal to any in-depth library strong in auto history and lore.
