Product Description

Product Description

Polkerton Pete - a chalk figure - has been minding his own business on a Somerset hill for longer than anyone remembers. But now he is under threat. Viola Pomfret, an officious councillor, wants him to go, if only because of the graphic depiction of those parts of him that should remain private.

This entertaining book tells of one woman's campaign to clean up the town of Polkerton, starting with the lewd chalk figure of the title, and the attempts of a rival resident to stop her. With a mutual friend wtih a foot firmly in each camp stirring up a media frenzy behind their backs it all gets quickly out of control - with some very amusing results.

This book has a contemporary setting (new age philosophy, media pundits, radical feminists), but it also has echoes of E F Benson's Mapp and Lucia books, with two redoubtable ladies of a certain age dragging the whole community into their battles.
