BBC Review

Multi-instrumentalist/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe and vocalist/songwriter Bembe Segue will be familiar names to anyone diggin' on London's jazz and soul undergrounds. The pair have been working extra hard over the last few years - independently and together to craft fresh and eclectic 21st century variants of black music styles, blending everything from Afrobeat and funk to jazz, soul and hip hop into phuturistic, subtly sideways missives.

With MdCL having played on over 150 records to date ( and having worked with everyone from Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott to Ed Motta and Shirley Bassey), and Segue's collaborative experience including stints with Pharaoh Sanders and 4Hero, Silhouette Brown and Ty, the duo are comfortable with a wide array of styles. The stuttering bass-heavy opening skit 'The Essence' throws open the doors on a world of sound that's deep, varied and forward-thinking: fresh combinations and defiant twists on classic grooves.

'Moonlight' bounces in with a rumbling hip hop beat and a deft exchange between Cali MC Blu and Segue. If that tune exposes the duo's love of Prince, wait 'til you hear 'Sweet,' which incurs a massive debt to the pint-sized pop don, combining a '80s robofunk riddim and squiggling synths with some street flava, courtesy of Ohio rapper replife. Tunes like 'Black Sun,' 'Mistaken,' 'Xtra Sensory' and 'How Did They Know' metaphorically dim the lights, favouring a slow-soul ambience that's all warm, swirling synths, languorous drums and ultra-sultry performances from Segue. Booty-shaking material is inevitable with any project involving these two, and comes in the shape of 'Money (Don't Let It Catch Ya),' - which says all you need to know about the artistic temperament of the producers - the Afro-tastic 'Turn The Light' and the fast-paced jazz-out 'Feel It,' which sees Segue swap verses with lauded Philly rapper Bahamadia.

With its angular yet urbane grooves, warm, robust aura and mish-mash of classic and new styles, The Politik is a well-rounded and highly approachable 21st century treasure. --Paul Sullivan

Dynamic Duo 1 Aug 2007
Format:Audio CD
An incredible collaboration between Mark De Clive-Lowe and Bembe Segue and a project that seems to soar even higher than any of their previous individual work!

The Politik has a righteously cosmic groove that's right in step with the 21st Century soul generation, a post-4Hero vibe that's built from broken beats, jazzy keyboards, and soulful vocals. The vocals of which are sung by Bembe, and the beats of which are handled by Mark!
The pair work together beautifully, no surprise, given the strength of previous collaborations and the record's filled with amazing little tunes that sparkle throughout. The album features a few key guest appearances by Bahamadia, Waajeed, Daz-I-Kue, and others, but the real genius here comes from the pair at the core, it includes tracks..... Money [Don't Let It Catch Ya], Mistaken, Moonlight, High Priestess, Sweet, Saturn, She's Gone, Xtra Sensory, Turn The Light, Feel It, and How Did They Know.

A Must for brokenbeat, Nu Jazz, Experimental, soul fans......

Almost 11 Aug 2007
Format:Audio CD
Having bought both Mark De-Clive Lowe albums, i was in eager anticipation of The Politik, a collaboration between himself and Bembe Segue.

Having heard a couple of records on myspace, i thought they showed promise, but nothing as stand out as MDCLs own previous work 'Relax...Unwind' or 'Travelling'. Thinking that the album would contain a couple of gems I bought it anyway.

As it stands the album is a blend of twisted soul, cool rap, broken beats and neo-jazz. All those genres mixed up makes for an interesting blend, but one thing the tracks lack is a decent hookline, a chorus to really get hold of, or a strong melody line. For this reason the album lacks an anchor and by the time you think you've only just hit 'play' the album has drifted 14 tracks. On the flip side there's promise in records like 'Black Sun' which is very Philadelphia and the bumpin 'Turn The Light Back On', perhaps these are the two stand out tracks on the LP.

It's a positive that this record has come out, perhaps this is the start of something much bigger.

Black Sun is the replacement track to the U.S. version of High Priestess....But still good nevertheless.
