Review

'...fascinating and heterogenous collection ... wide-ranging, original and provocative' -- The Tablet, 31 March, 2001 (Tom Caldin)

'This timely collection ... a sparkling introduction ... closely-focused and well-integrated' -- Journal of Latin American Studies, vol. 34, part 2, May 2002 (Guy Thomson, University of Warwick)

'a book that tries to cover a necessary hole and that has a polemical content' -- Reviews in History, 272, January 2002 (Dr Carlos Malamud, Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset)

From the Author

This book was conceived at the annual Nineteenth-Century History Workshop at the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of London. It became clear at the Workshop that the crude orthodoxy that presents the Church as monolithically opposed to modern politics needs serious qualification. Liberalism was seldom as atheistic and soulless as the Church portrayed it; nor was the Church as bigoted and backward as liberals maintained.
