Book Description

8 Aug 2012 1107694299 978-1107694293 3
Since its first edition, this textbook has been the first choice of teachers and students alike, due to its clear introduction to the basic principles of the multilateral trading system and its detailed examination of the law of the World Trade Organization. The third edition continues to explore the institutional and substantive law of the WTO. Material has been restructured to closely align with teaching approaches making it even more user-friendly. It has been updated to incorporate all new developments in the WTO's body of case law. Questions and assignments are integrated to allow students to assess their understanding, while chapter summaries reinforce learning. Chapters end with an exercise reflecting real-life trade problems: these challenge students (and practitioners) and enable them to hone their analytical skills. This title is an essential tool for all WTO law students and will also serve as the practitioner's introductory guide to the WTO.

Product Description

Review

'The greatest value that I find in this book is the simplicity with which it presents a highly complex field. Not only is the book easy to read, but it is also highly systematic in its presentation. Each chapter takes the reader through a step-by-step process which, taken with the summaries of relevant cases, ensures that by its completion, the reader is well versed with the different agreements of the WTO. I would recommend this book to any student and practitioner of WTO law and policy.' William Nyambo Mwanza, student, School of Law, University of Edinburgh

'This is an essential book for anyone studying the law of international trade; the thorough explanation[s] of hard law and soft law provide a complete and balanced view of the law, inner workings and policy of the World Trade Organization … The comprehensive yet easily digestible summaries within each chapter highlight the most vital information, which really help[s] to streamline revision and provide concise structure to essay writing. The questions and assignments act as an efficient mechanism for exam and dissertation preparation and practice, increasing understanding of the more complicated principles of international trade law. The result of this is that one feels much better placed to follow a career in the research or practice of the law of international trade, an increasingly pivotal area of law in the ever-more globalised environment in which we live.' Lydia Clathworthy, LLM International Commercial Law student, University of Exeter

'This comprehensive textbook brings clarity to a complex and dynamic area of law. Van den Bossche writes in a clear and logical manner with the structure of the book making navigation effortless. The questions and assignments at the end of each sub-topic engender deeper thinking and the summary section in each chapter provides a useful overview as well as an excellent aide memoire.' Christopher Pilgrim, LLM International Business Law student, University of Liverpool

'An excellent textbook, written with an admirable degree of clarity and rigour … Professor Van den Bossche remarkably succeeds in combining an in-depth analysis of the law of the World Trade Organisation with a thought-provoking introduction to the legal, institutional, and policy challenges facing the multilateral trading system. The book is an invaluable reference for students, academics and practitioners in the field.' Dr Gracia Marín Durán, Director, LLM Programme in International Economic Law, University of Edinburgh

'[The Law and Policy of the World Trade Organization] is an invaluable resource for the study of WTO law. Van den Bossche's text is well-referenced, structured, and accessible making it an ideal introduction to the cases, concepts, and complexities of the WTO.' Stephen Barber, LLM IEL 2011–2012, School of Law, University of Edinburgh

'Retaining the clarity of expression and critical analysis that were hallmarks of previous editions, this new edition of The Law and Policy of the World Trade Organization benefits from both a new structure and the additional expertise of a new co-author. Erudite, accessible and engaging, this seminal textbook is required reading for all students and practitioners in the field.' Professor John Jackson, Georgetown Law School

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best textbook on WTO law 9 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this as soon as it became available and had it Fedexed to me in Jakarta. This suburb book follows in the footsteps of the previous two editions and has the same clear, concise but yet comprehensive style. In my view, this is still the best textbook on the market for WTO law, and beats all competitors (Jackson/Davey/Sykes, Trebilcock/Howse/Eliason, Matsushita/Schoenbaum/Mavroidis, Hoekman/Kostecki) just hands down. I use it to prepare lessons in my masters class and for training that I give to government officials working on these issues and it's simply the best and easiest for everyone to understand, and has the benefit of not being overly biased towards one jurisdiction (like the US). It would be great to get the Kindle version published at the same time as the print versions, and CUP needs to do a better job of this (despite their worries on copyright infringement).

The book is very good for students and practitioners as well. Interesting and up to the standard. Would recommend the writers to make further updates in the future so that it will be like a living document!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than described: 9 Mar 2014
By Ann
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The description of the book seemed to give me the impression the book was not in as good a condition as it was when I received it. In a matter of fact, the book was in very good condition and so was pretty pleased. Obviously, this means that the seller gives a more than honest description of it's products.
