Product Description

Out of touch for years, a poet and a psychic meet on an Irish country road, when he stops to give her a ride. Molly tells Paddy she now works for a psychic telephone line and is earning top money. He hears about the problems and dilemmas of her clients, and especially about Stanley, a dwarf with a Bono fetish.

A few months later Molly calls Paddy, and asks for help with a situation: Stanley has become a DJ and is doing a residency at a local resort. He wants to meet his psychic and the prospect is unsettling her. So she asks Paddy to be her escort. He agrees, and takes her to see the DJ. The meeting goes haywire and thus begins a love story and the bursting open of Stanley Huffington’s secret life.

Set in rural Ireland, Dublin, Barcelona and elsewhere, The Poet, the Psychic and the Knave, is a beautifully crafted novella. Told in alternating voices of the poet, psychic, dwarf and narrator, it a story with humor, poignancy and misguided redemption.

Praise for Eddie Stack’s writing —

"Variously fantastic, comic, elegiac and nostalgic, Mr. Stack's fiction is versatile and engaging...a vivid, compassionate, authentic voice...securing (him) a place in the celebrated tradition of his country's storytelling." New York Times Book Review

"The fantastical and the everyday combine with wit, sharpness and brio...Never sentimental, often funny, always accurate, this is pithy, finely-tuned writing of a high order." The Observer (UK)

"Exceptionally fine tuned...an authentic voice of the migrant Irish."
San Francisco Chronicle.

Just the kind of read for a rainy day! 17 April 2012

If you are a bono fan, this is definitely not the book for you.
If you are not and want to take a few moments to read a different kind of fiction then this book fits the bill.

Three people, three different stories, and three points of view.
Not sure where this takes place somewhere in Ireland but it's the kind of place you almost wished you lived close to.

The characters and the places are just exotic enough to make you want to go out and grab a beer and enjoy some fun time with friends you don't know.
The book has it all, music, musings, madness, just the right kind of plot you need when you don't want to do any heavy intellectual lifting.

Five stars for the effort. It is worth it. Enjoy

A great way to pass a Sunday afternoon 25 Sep 2011

This was a very enjoyable, quirky book that I couldn't put down. Basically there are three characters - you guessed it, a poet, a psychic and a knave. I had to look up the meaning of knave in the dictionary because, although it's a well known word, I don't think I've ever used it and wanted to be sure of its meaning. Although a knave can be a male servant of low birth, it also is defined as a "tricky, deceitful fellow". Mr. Stack's knave is definitely the latter. All three characters come to life in this short story, which moves quite quickly toward a satisfying ending. Eddie Stack is brilliant at creating colorful, unusual characters, who are both endearing and exasperating. This story was no exception, although I think in this case he has created two endearing, likable characters and one exasperating one. All three were pleasant company to pass the Sunday afternoon it took to read the book!
