Product Description

From the Back Cover

'The Poetry of Burns' (1759-96) is characterised by its disarming honesty and humanity, and by the poet's remarkable lyric gift. Angry or compassionate, sentimental or satirical, romantic or bawdy, Burns's poetry transcends the Scottish dialect in which it is written to speak to all of us.

This new, specially commissioned recording offers a wide-ranging choice of Burns's songs and lyrical poems; and longer poems such as 'Tam o'Shanter', and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' are also included in their entirety. All are read by John Cairney, world-famous for his many stage and television performances of the life and work of Scotland's national bard. Lovers of Burns's poetry will find much to enjoy in this selection, which also provides an extensive introduction for those as yet unfamiliar with his work.

About the Author

Famous 18th-century Scottish poet and lyricist. Widely recognized as the national poet of Scotland, Burns is also celebrated as a pioneer of the Romantic Movement. His poetry covers a broad colourful spectrum and is noteworthy for its intensity and sincerity. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment on Kindle 28 Oct 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
There's no doubting the talent of Robert Burns, and it's certainly all in here. If you can find it. The problem is that the formatting of this ebook is woeful, with even the introduction merging in to the main content. It can be difficult to see where one poem ends and another begins, with no font/size differentiation for poem/song titles and not a single new paragraph started from the beginning of the book to the end.

Add to this the fact that there is no table of contents and comes at a length of 4,896 locations, and you've got a dense, confusing entry in to the world of Robert Burns.

It's still a wonderful read, but you'll battle with the layout the whole way through. Such incredible talent deserves much better than this.

I dont understand why this book is in the collection in its present form. No format whatever, so whats the point? For the national Scottish bard this book is a disgrace.

1.0 out of 5 stars Formatting? 4 Jan 2011

This score isn't about the content, but the presentation. Very very poor, poems and songs just run from one to the next. A little more effort would have made this a must grab.

4.0 out of 5 stars good reference point 2 Jan 2014

This book is currently free, so you have nothing to lose by trying it out.

I only got it too look at specific poems and what I saw of it was well formatted with no spelling mistakes or punctuation errors, but that isn't to say the whole book is like it. It was easy enough to find what I wanted in the book using the search function on the kindle.

Recommended if you have an interest or curiosity about the authors works

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert Burns -- Scotland's Poet of the Ages 5 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The songs and poems of Robert burns are in a category by themselves. Over 250 years old and they have as much meaning today as they did when they were written. This recording brings a memorable moment back to life. I really enjoyed it!

The actor's lovely voice perfectly conveys Burns' wise and powerful poetry - though would help to have a short book for translation!
