From the Publisher

The Pocket Book of Proofreading is just right. It offers so much more for much less. Learn the secrets of successful proofreading and freelancing for publishers, and how to earn extra income from home.

The optional instant file download (PDF) is a professional three-part proofreading and copy-editing course with free extra exercises. Uses BS 5261C:2005 (marks for copy preparation and proof correction).

The Pocket Book of Proofreading offers a comprehensive overview of freelancing for publishers and working as a freelance proofreader.

Note: If this book were simply turned into A4 pages and made into a proofreading and editing course (which in fact it actually was originally), it would make a course that could be sold at the same price as existing proofreading courses on the market. Hence the value of this popular book.

From the Author

The Pocket Book of Proofreading contains 262 pages and is complete as it is. You don't really need anything more. If you are keen to learn more, however, the book tells you how to access a new downloadable proofreading and copy-editing course with FREE extra exercises (approximately 170 A4 pages, making a total of 432 pages!). It's all you need.

Learn Freelancing and its associated website offers a professional and comprehensive proofreading course, and you can learn about copy-editing too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good things do come in small packages! 28 July 2008
I have been "doing a bit" of proofreading and copy-editing over the years. I have paid over two hundred pounds for a correspondence course and bought several hallowed tomes on the subject.

William Critchley has done a fantastic job of writing this excellent book. It covers everything I did on my correspondence course and brought the material fully up to date. It is a much friendlier read than some of the other books I have read on the subject.

There really is everything you need to become or improve as a freelance proofreader or copy-editor. The online material is an excellent adjunct to the book (and is very reasonably priced.) There is even email support should you require help.

There is a wealth of knowledge from someone who really has been there and done that! I highly recommend this fantastic resource and I shall refer to mine often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring 8 May 2010
This book grabs you from the first page. It is written with light-heartedness, but also explains the difficulties of finding work as a proofreader. Very informative and inspiring. If you want to take up proofreading forget all the other books and expensive courses, buy this and the accompanying course, (details of which are within the book).

5.0 out of 5 stars The proof of the pudding... 6 April 2010
Delve into this book and you won't be able to put it down!
It makes for a good read and whilst being entertaining and stimulating you won't realise you are learning!
Although it is written in a slightly informal, almost quirky style,it delivers its message thoroughly, concisely and unambiguously.
The chapters on finding work, contacts, business tips etc. are invaluable.I will certainly be following Mr William Critchley's advice.
Overall it is a mine of great information,a reference book to cherish.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview for prospective proofreaders 29 May 2011
By Anna
Writing as a buyer who has only read this book and not yet attempted to enter into proofreading as a profession, I can't comment on the accuracy of Critchley's guidance for finding work in this field. However, I found the book a very useful read in terms of acquainting me with the realities of professional proofreading and as an introduction to the basics of the job. I also wasn't expecting such an extensive section of the book dealing with spelling, punctuation and grammar, which was a welcome surprise.

As the title suggests, this is a pocket book and readers are advised to purchase further reference books if entering into proofreading professionally. Critchley provides plenty of information about which are the best to buy, especially when just starting out.

In addition, he provides a downloadable set of online proofs on which to practise. I haven't used these yet so, again, can't comment on them, but this certainly sounds like a useful and effective tool. There may be a charge attached to them but I'm not sure.

Overall, I really would recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out about the world of proofreading as it not only deals with it theoretically but is an educational tool, complemented by anecdotes from Critchley's own experience. The author is honest and writes accessibly. He (very wisely) won't get your hopes up about becoming a successful freelance proofreader, but he will definitely point you in the right direction.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great little book full of invaluable information - and not just about proofing. You'll find chapters on publishing, grammar, house styles and all sorts of interesting stuff (assuming you find stuff to do with writing interesting).

It comes (as the name suggests) in a nice sized, manageable format, that is easy to dip in and out of as and when is needed - no heavy Oxford publication here!

It includes charts of all the proofreading marks and symbols and provides practical examples of how to use them correctly. There's exercises to do and whole book is written in a clear and fun style - making a book that could have easily been hard-going actually quite enjoyable to read.

You'll find out everything you need to know about the subject in its pages, including the history of some of the language. For instance I had always come across 'stet' scribbled in margins, and although I knew it meant not to interfere or alter the copy on the page I didn't know it was actually Latin for, 'Let it stand'... until now.

The book also offers practical tips on how to break into proofing as a career with online support too, so you really do get quite a lot from this little book; it really does offer quite a lot of bang for your buck!

The book is a complete start-to-finish on the subject, written by someone who obviously knows what he's on about, so if you want to know anything about the subject - or are considering breaking into it as a career - this is the book for you.

A completely realistic guide to proofreading and copy-editing. Ideal for beginners or seasoned pros. Sits on my desk next to Hart's Rules and gets just as much attention - the content is relevant, true to life and entertainingly written.

An excellent buy.
