Bestselling author of the ground-breaking book
Your Life in Your Hands now brings us
The Plant Programme, a collection of recipes to fight breast and prostate cancer. Plant developed breast cancer in 1987 and as a scientist was frustrated by the lack of answers on why cancer develops--and what we can do to cure and prevent it. She discovered one fact that she couldn't ignore--that 1 in 10 women in the UK will develop breast cancer whereas the incidence in China is just 1 in 10 thousand. From this she went on to study the links between lifestyle and diet and made some controversial recommendations--most notably to avoid all kinds of dairy produce and adopt a largely vegan diet.
The Plant Programme is a collection of recipes and dietary advice that follows this approach. To start off, the principles behind the diet are re-explained and a shopping list of ingredients is given. The main body of the book contains recipes for everyday eating --including snacks and meals that will suit kids and the rest of the family. Without exception, these are simple, quite quick to prepare and though there are no illustrations, highly appetising. Those cautious about the absence of dairy needn't feel apprehensive--you really don't notice it. Mediterranean and Asian dishes feature prominently, with recipes such as Couscous with Rocket, Chicken and Pine Nuts, Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup or Stir-Fried Cauliflower, Zucchini and Fennel. Even the more virtuous ingredients such as tofu and lentils are made delicious through liberal use of fresh herbs and spices. And the recipes for smoothies, cookies and desserts (such as Orange and Almond Cake) will have the rest of the family keen to tuck in with you.
Readers of Your Life in Your Hands will know exactly how exciting Jane Plant's research has been to anyone concerned about cancer. Here though, she and Gill Tidey have scored a major success in translating this scientific knowledge into a collection of easy recipes that can be enjoyed on a daily basis by the whole family. This is a positive and much needed book that will empower all those affected by this cruel disease.--Rachel O'Connor

From the Publisher
Jane Plant, with her friend and fellow scientist Gill Tidey, builds upon the platform of YOUR LIFE IN YOUR HANDS, her bestselling book about breast-cancer, to give the reader and full programme of meal plans and recipes for those who wish to use diet in their battle against breast, prostate and bowel cancer. Recently, a national newspaper vindicated Janes belief in abstaining from a dairy diet and using soya instead; the Cancer Research Campaign reported that a soya-rich, dairy-free diet may reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Having been privileged enough to be fed by Jane and Gill, I can assure you that the food is not only beneficial but also delicious and very tempting.

From the Author
Jane Plant writes:
After my first book Your Life in Your Hands was published I was inundated with requests for further help - especially what to eat and what not to eat. Clearly there was a need for a book to help people understand more about non-dairy healthy eating but in a simple attractive format such as a cookbook. I was an adequate cook but certainly not of a standard to write the sort of aspirational book I thought was needed to show how delicious healthy food can be. I therefore invited Gill to work on the book with me. I have known Gill for some time and have always admired her ability to produce delicious meals apparently effortlessly. She has lived and worked abroad for much of her life and learnt to cook a tremendous range of meals. She is particularly good at Asian cooking which is important in producing a book targeted at breast and prostate cancer sufferers since these diseases are so rare there.
We had tremendous fun writing the book and even more tasting and eating the meals prepared from it. We worked as a team with Gill devising recipes while I checked to ensure we used ingredients which there was no evidence of carcinogenicity. I also did more research on ingredients with anti-cancer properties and many are included in the meals in the book.
Since we started on the book I have been using the recipes to make lots of delicious meals for family and friends and receive lots of compliments about my cooking!
I hope you too will enjoy the benefits of learning to cook delicious healthy meals.
Gill Tidey writes:
I was delighted when Jane asked me to work on The Plant Programme with her. I had really enjoyed reading Your Life in Your Hands and knew from friends wiht cancer how much it had helped them.
As a geologist myself I have known for some time how much Jane is respected as a scientist. Working with her on the new book, I have realised how much she knows about food chemistry - her hobby and how thorough she is in checking the facts. Also how good she is at spotting the voice of vested interest.
I have always cooked simple, tasty Asian style meals but not until working with Jane did I give up dairy completely. Since adopting The Plant Programme my family say they have never eaten better or felt healthier.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with Jane on this book which I believe will make a real contribution to people's health.
