3.0 out of 5 stars WORD TO THE WISE 5 Feb 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Just a quick comment regarding this Box set. If you purchase ' THE UNIVERSE ' SEASON 1, you get the whole of the series of ' THE PLANETS ' included on the discs. I found out the hard way, and wasted my money buying both. Hope this helps.

This is a fascinating series which can be watched again and again - a great deal of information and some extraordinary visuals, both actual and computer-generated. It explains and teaches, as well as informs. However, to English ears (mine at any rate) the endless accompanying music is portentous, banal and completely unnecessary. It 's a pity they did not let the intrinsic interest of the subject matter and the expert commentaries speak for themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth adding to your collection 18 May 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
For anyone who's seen the 'Universe' series, this appears to be the precursor to it. It's not quite as flash, and was surprised when I found it without review, but I enjoyed it all the same and to someone who is into the whole Physics/space/planets thing, I would recommend it.

Love to see this in Bluray!

2.0 out of 5 stars the universe watered-down... 11 Sep 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
if you buy this dvd set - it will be like reading a book with no beginning/end, because this dvd set is just the universe season 1. or, it would be... if not for the missing 9 episodes(only 5 of the 14 episodes on this dvd), and its selling for around the same price as well hmm. the dvd episodes are not rubbish its just a very poor deal in my opinion, and i wish i read the reviews before i made the purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Astro Physics for the Brain Dead? 26 Oct 2011
By JG
Format:DVD
This is the worst set of DVDs about astronomical matters that I've ever had inflicted upon me.

It's typical American tripe for the brain dead. The narrator is quite awful, totally devoid of any expression in his voice, and of course getting the stress wrong throughout. Everything has to be explained to an apparently totally naive audience. The music throughout is both unnecessary and abysmal.

The interviews with various persons as supposed experts are awful, as the people have no expression to their voices, and they stand there waggling their hands about in a most annoying manner.

I've rated it as one 'star', only because I couldn't get the routines here to accept NO stars or take five dustbin lids instead!
