Pixar's unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the "Silly Symphonies" during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it's only 90 seconds long, "Luxo, Jr." (1986) ranks as the "Steamboat Willie" of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.)

When the artists began work on Toy Story, they had learned so much from the shorts, they were ready to undertake that landmark creation. In the later shorts, the viewer can see the artists continuing to experiment: with a more realistic human figure in "Geri's Game" and with new ways of suggesting atmospheric effects in "Boundin'." Some of the more recent shorts continue the adventures of the characters from the features. "Jack-Jack Attack" reveals what happened to the hapless baby-sitter while the Incredibles were off fighting Syndrome, while "Mater and the Ghost Light" shows that life goes on for the inhabitants of Radiator Springs. When Sully from Monsters, Inc. tries to adjust his seat in "Mike's New Car," the animators prolong the moment to wring every drop of humour from the situation--just as an earlier generation of animators milked Wile E. Coyote's antics for all they were worth. The long-unseen films for Sesame Street are an unexpected bonus. A delightful collection of entertaining shorts, and a significant chronicle of the growth of computer animation. --Charles Solomon

I recently got this DVD for my birthday, and we all had a great time watching it.

This DVD collection (also on blu-ray) contains all of Pixar's short films from The Adventures of Andre and Wally B (1984) to Lifted (2006). Although many of these shorts have appeared on home video releases of Pixar's feature length films (be it VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray), this DVD is still well worth it because not only is it nice to have them all available in one place, but also to experience Pixar's earlier works such as Tin Toy, Red's Dream and the aforementioned Andre and Wally B. The extras are also worth a look.

My top five:

- Luxo Jnr
- For The Birds
- Tin Toy
- Lifted
- Mike's New Car

If you like Pixar, then this DVD is a must, even if you have most of these already!

A great chance to see Pixar shorts both old and new on one disc.

There are two types of shorts here- the 1980s ones (5 of them) from when CG was brand new, computers were less powerful than today's mobile phones and yet Pixar managed to give character and life to some simple objects in a brilliant way. There's an interesting 30-minute documentary which makes you realise that in the 80s animating was so heavily computer-programming and maths based and very far removed from modern CG packages. You can't fail to be impressed. "Luxo" remains an absolute classic, a defining moment in animation.

Then there's the later shorts (1997 and beyond) which are either test pieces, giving animators and directors their first taste of doing their own film, or spin-off shorts relating to their feature film work. These are still great- especially Jack Jack Attack which is just brilliant- but they're not the sheer technical marvel that the 1980s ones were. Some of them are less impressive than their features and very slightly disappointing. It's still great to see them all in one place though.

Finding these short animations on the Pixar films was always a delight so seemed sensible to get them on one DVD with any missing ones.
13 shorts some of which are OK while others are, for me, genius : Luxo Jr, Tin Toy, Knick Knack, Jack-Jack attack, One Man Band and Lifted.
BUT there is something wrong with having them on a single DVD. They're quite short so the titles/credits seem overly long so watching the whole DVD gets tiresome. There's also some weird feeling when the shorts are the main feature rather than an amusing extra unearthed on some bonus DVD. What it is good for is knowing where the short is rather than having to trawl through a stack-full of Pixar DVDs.
