This book is utter madness. It's full of lunacies great and small, from the 1001 Islands, including one made entirely out of dessert, to one of the pirates' tin ears, to the encyclopaedia salesman thrown out to see in a blue suitcase and later rescued, to the extra strong gingerbread... it's absolutely packed with them. The book is so wacky and imaginative it's impossible to warm to it. It's light-hearted, easy going and all round good fun. It's amusing and it's witty. Children will love it for the colourful world the author creates, and adults will love it for the same reason - few books have this much imagination condensed into such a small space.

... I remember when I was a kid listening to this on talking books. It's better than Harry Potter (but in a very similar vein). Just to let you know what happens in this book, there is a witch called Mrs Mangle (amusing to me at the time because of a certain Australian soap-opera) two identical twins separated at birth, one of whom is a millionaire inventor - Humbert Cash-Cash - and the other is the son of a sweet maker. Anyway the crew of the sinfull sausage - the pirates - plot to capture the inventor, but land on the wrong island and pick up his identical twin. What a story, honsetly, my memory is so clouded but what I can remember is so brilliant and funny. ... please order it and read it to your kids. They'll love it.

This is an absolutely hilarious account of kidnapping, adventure, education and mistaken identity. I read it as a child and have returned to it countless times as an adult. It combines all the classic childrens books staples: pirates; orphans; school; desert islands; witches and dragons with some hilarious twists. keeps you laughing until the end. i would highly reccomend this book to anyone with a funny bone.
