Book Description

30 Aug 2012 DVD Tie in

To tie in with the DVD release of The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists, this exclusive, fully illustrated guide takes us behind the scenes to discover how 2012's hottest film was made. Packed with previously unseen visual material, including storyboards and designs for sets and key characters, this highly collectible full-colour book charts the journey from paper to screen: a five-year process for a crew of just 320 people - requiring 3.000 storyboard images, 19,456 square metres of foam board and 893 different mouths for the Pirate Captain alone. Also included are rare interviews with the directors, producers and key members of the production team, giving insight into the creative and technical challenges of a project of this size and ambition.

The Making of The Pirates! is a must-have for the many fans of the film, and for anyone interested in the methods, passions and eccentricities of Aardman, this most quintessentially British animation studio.

A timber-shivering adventure that speaks to the pirate in all of us (Ben Schott)

A short, deliriously funny novel about incredibly stupid pirates and ham ... I've had to grow a luxuriant beard to conceal the grin that's been compromising my dignity since I read it (Ardal O'Hanlon)

Hilarious. Destined to become a classic of pirate comic fiction (Eric Idle)

Gideon Defoe definitively puts the "Ho ho!" - and, indeed, the "Yo!" - into pirating (Caitlin Moran)

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book! 30 Sep 2012

I loved the film (despite the fact it isn't true to the original book)and was intrigued as to how they'd made it. I assumed that it was mainly done with cgi technology. But it isn't! Yes there is some but not as much as you may think. This book shows how everything was done, how many faces were made for each character, the intricate sets that were made and it shows the tiny detailing that you probably miss in the film but were put in any way. It's a brilliant detailed book that is in no way boring! It has interviews with the main characters in the film as well as the ones out of the limelight. It is full of facts and statistics (how many pirate captains were made? how many beards? How many cups of tea were drunk?....) as well as intriguing questions incase you missed something in the film. (did you see jane austen?, charles dickens or the elephant man? Was there a gold shaun the sheep or gromit in the Queens stash of gold in the tower?) I will have to watch the film again and see it from a new perspective!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey ho! Excellent! 7 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It is a very nice story of hard work of plenty of people in stop motion animation. The story covers all types of work in this industry and has a huge amount of illustrations and photos on all stages of production. By the way, there is a list of artists on the last pages - check it carefully! May be you could find somebody of your neighbours there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely stop motion animation movie tie in book 15 May 2013
By Lori Prins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Ardman has done it again! Fun and funny movie, nicely told, and then this great tie in - How we made it, book. I have other Tie-in books from them, and have enjoyed each and every one. They are on my "keeper" list - but then I love stop motion.
Take a look and enjoy it too!
