Book Description

15 Nov 2009
Breaking free from a dead-end relationship, Ree Drummond left Los Angeles and made a pit stop at home in Oklahoma on the way to a new life in Chicago. It was there she met 'Marlboro Man', a fourth-generation cattle rancher with steely blue eyes and a muscular work-honed body. Drummond fell hard and fast, and suddenly she was married, living on his ranch in the middle of nowhere, and managing a brood of four young children (also known as 'ranch hands'). In her folksy, wonderfully engaging voice, Drummond shares how she learned to cope with the isolation and peculiarities of ranch life, from chasing beavers out of the pond and saddling horses, to cooking for a man who believes the sun rises and sets in a steak and baked potato. Using only simple and widely available ingredients, Drummond shares many of her satisfying and delicious recipes - both for cowboys and cowgirls - including Cowboy Calzones, Pioneer Woman's Ribeye Steaks, Cheese Grits, fresh Blackberry Cobbler, Pico de Gallo, and Iny's Prune Cake. Bursting with the colours and flavours of country life and peppered with her wonderful homespun stories, "The Pioneer Woman Cooks" encourages even the most harried urban cook to slow down, relish the joys of family, nature, and great food, and keep it real.

5.0 out of 5 stars from blog to book 28 Nov 2009
By kmac
Format:Hardcover
I bought this from amazon.com when I was in the US recently as I have read the pioneer woman's blog. It is a lovely and very readable cookery book. Some of the ingredients are a little lost in translation but all her recipes are accompanied by step-by-step photos. I would recommend this for the reading of it alone though I am yet to try any of her recipes as still reading it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book! 22 Oct 2010

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've read the Pioneer Woman blog for years and like it so much that I decided to buy her book as well, even though it doesn't really offer anything different from what the blog already contains. It's not just a cookbook, it's a portrayal of a life on a cattle ranch, with wonderful photos and stories. As much a bedside or coffee table book as a cookbook. Recipes are simple and good for a beginner, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 words, Cinnamon Rolls!!!!!! 6 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
I've been a fan of PW's blog for years and have tried many of her recipes, so I was delighted to receive this book for Christmas. The recipes are beautifully presented with fantastic step by step photos, making it perfect for beginners. Yes, all the recipes are available on-line, but honestly I prefer to follow a cookbook instead of my computer. Some of the recipes I love from her blog are missing but to be fair she couldn't publish everything.

The recipes are interspersed with tales of Ree's life on a ranch and anecdotes about the recipes which make this more than your ordinary cookbook. Plus as the photos are her own, you know Ree, personally, has truly tried and tested every recipe.

I will also agree with Ree that her Cinnamon Rolls are the greatest in the world. I was very reluctant to try this recipe as I thought it would be very complicated but thankfully I was wrong. These rolls are one of the easiest things I've ever made and taste phenomenal. I halved the recipe and still ended up with over 2 dozen rolls. I don't have Maple extract for the icing so used 1tsp vanilla extract with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup and some extra icing sugar and it worked out perfectly.
