“[Ree Drummond is] funny, enthusiastic and self-deprecating, making the book appeal to pavement-pounders and pioneer types alike [with] recipes like steak with whiskey cream sauce, leek and potato pizza and pico de gallo. As a portrait of a real American family kitchen, it works.” (New York Times)

“Drummond invites fans into her world with irresistible recipes and photos…. Here’s a mom of four who can turn out a Perfect Pot Roast and make feasts for girlfriends that start with sangria and finish with crème brûlée. It’s sweet and seductive: You’ll want to plunge right in.” (People)

“Jokey and irresistible. Drummond’s…appreciation for something as simple as well-made pico de gallo is infectious. Such attentiveness to basic cooking skills makes the book entertaining and useful.” (New York Times Gift Guide)

“Who needs Julia Child? I’ve got Pioneer Woman.” (Baltimore Sun)

“Drummond’s writing style is closer to a good friend dishing out advice than an expert telling people want to do.” (Denver Daily News)

“[Ree Drummond] whips up mouthwatering meals with easy-to-find ingredients (she’s miles away from restaurants and supermarkets) and shares what living in a not-so-little house on the prairie is really all about. ” (People)

From the Back Cover

My name is Ree.

Some folks know me as The Pioneer Woman.

After years of living in Los Angeles, I made a pit stop in my hometown in Oklahoma on the way to a new, exciting life in Chicago. It was during my stay at home that I met Marlboro Man, a mysterious cowboy with steely blue eyes and a muscular, work-honed body. A strict vegetarian, I fell hard and fast, and before I knew it we were married and living on his ranch in the middle of nowhere, taking care of animals, and managing a brood of four young children. I had no idea how I'd wound up there, but I knew it was exactly where I belonged.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks is a homespun collection of photography, rural stories, and scrumptious recipes that have defined my experience in the country. I share many of the delicious cowboy-tested recipes I've learned to make during my years as an accidental ranch wife—including Rib-Eye Steak with Whiskey Cream Sauce, Lasagna, Fried Chicken, Patsy's Blackberry Cobbler, and Cinnamon Rolls—not to mention several "cowgirl-friendly" dishes, such as Sherried Tomato Soup, Olive Cheese Bread, and Crème Brûlée. I show my recipes in full color, step-by-step detail, so it's as easy as pie to follow along.

You'll also find colorful images of rural life: cows, horses, country kids, and plenty of chaps-wearing cowboys.

I hope you get a kick out of this book of mine. I hope it makes you smile. I hope the recipes bring you recognition, accolades, and marriage proposals. And I hope it encourages even the most harried urban cook to slow down, relish the joys of family, nature, and great food, and enjoy life.

5.0 out of 5 stars from blog to book 28 Nov 2009
By kmac
I bought this from when I was in the US recently as I have read the pioneer woman's blog. It is a lovely and very readable cookery book. Some of the ingredients are a little lost in translation but all her recipes are accompanied by step-by-step photos. I would recommend this for the reading of it alone though I am yet to try any of her recipes as still reading it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book! 22 Oct 2010

I've read the Pioneer Woman blog for years and like it so much that I decided to buy her book as well, even though it doesn't really offer anything different from what the blog already contains. It's not just a cookbook, it's a portrayal of a life on a cattle ranch, with wonderful photos and stories. As much a bedside or coffee table book as a cookbook. Recipes are simple and good for a beginner, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Americana 16 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I was innocently browsing cookbooks on, when through the personalized recommendations Ree's up-and-coming book appeared. We exchanged what I thought was just a brief glance, as passers-by often do. But then it stretched out an invisible arm, firmly grabbed my scrolling hand, and with its other hand gently turned my face to make me look again at its American West-style cover. I couldn't help but pre-order it, and within the next 24 hours I had homepaged, raided her cooking section, and had placed an order for this book, too. For good measure.

I got to say it: I loooove American food. That country is so vast and has got such a diverse food culture - thanks to the many different ethnic groups who immigrated throughout America's history, and a very varied climate - that one could satisfy all her culinary cravings from a handful of books on 'American' food......... Okay, maybe its not quite like that. (But it's not far from the truth, either.)

This is what Ree's recipes are not: Fancy. Difficult. Pretentious. Lean. Vegetarian. So, if you are after a state-of-the-art culinary experience that requires you and an army of sous-chefs to slave over a hot stove for hours to produce the ultimate slimmers-feast on your quest to achieve size 0 within a week or two - this is not the book for you. And if you don't take to eating lots of animal flesh and are not short of working recipes for delicious desserts - you too should look elsewhere.

This is what Ree's recipes are: Comfort Food. Homely. Easy. Made from everyday ingredients. Mostly one-pot meals. Hearty. They can be rib-sticking, but only if you find you love them so much that you have to have them every day - and work a desk job.

The Pioneer Woman's first recipe book has some great recipes. Her food always sounds and looks delicious. I love reading her blog and she includes some family bits to read about their life on the ranch in this book with great photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 words, Cinnamon Rolls!!!!!! 6 Jan 2011
I've been a fan of PW's blog for years and have tried many of her recipes, so I was delighted to receive this book for Christmas. The recipes are beautifully presented with fantastic step by step photos, making it perfect for beginners. Yes, all the recipes are available on-line, but honestly I prefer to follow a cookbook instead of my computer. Some of the recipes I love from her blog are missing but to be fair she couldn't publish everything.

The recipes are interspersed with tales of Ree's life on a ranch and anecdotes about the recipes which make this more than your ordinary cookbook. Plus as the photos are her own, you know Ree, personally, has truly tried and tested every recipe.

I will also agree with Ree that her Cinnamon Rolls are the greatest in the world. I was very reluctant to try this recipe as I thought it would be very complicated but thankfully I was wrong. These rolls are one of the easiest things I've ever made and taste phenomenal. I halved the recipe and still ended up with over 2 dozen rolls. I don't have Maple extract for the icing so used 1tsp vanilla extract with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup and some extra icing sugar and it worked out perfectly.
