Product Description

Collegiate farce meets espionage caper in a Wodehousian tale with a twist.

A local newspaper run by a duo with a shady past.
A college of secrets, and secrets about secrets.
A stranger seeking vengeance.
An all-seeing eye.

Lightly dusted with scandal, gin-addicted academic Spencer Flowers receives an ultimatum from the fork-tongued Master of St Paul’s, Cambridge: top up the college coffers or else. The question is, how?

Meanwhile rookie reporter Conor Geraghty, yearning for a juicy obituary or two, meets a stranger with a scoop — and faces a life-changing dilemma.

Paths cross, fates intertwine and crisis escalates, and there goes more than the weekend.

Laced with humour and pathos, The Pink and the Grey is a smart, town-meets-gown thriller about revenge and truth, and about watchers and watched.

And just what are the secrets of St Paul’s?

“Undefinable and brilliant… a fantastic rework of an old idea. ****” — So So Gay Magazine

Humour is often more difficult to capture on the written page than straightforward dramatic prose, reliquishing so many of the pre-requisites (timing, subtleties of inflection, delivery) to the reader. Often so-called humorous books rely on pastiches of famous novels or well-known genres to deliver their laughs with the broadest of brushstrokes and little regard for actual stroytelling.

What we have here is a book that is certainly funny (I "LOL"ed, as the kids apparently say these day, on multiple occasions), but also has at its core a compelling story about revenge and intrigue set behind the closed doors of a fictional Cambridge college. You could take away all the humourous aspects and still be left with a great story.

But having said that, the humour is what makes this book. There are some terrific characters -- I particularly enjoyed Amanda the college master and her torturous bull-in-a-dictionary-shop dialogue.

Highly recommended!

Read the description and be curious. Pick it up and it brings a smile. Then, read it and know if you ever put it down, it won't be for long because the laughs keep bringing you back.

Well thought out plot that will keep you gripped and laughing to the end, as you follow the journeys of some very colourful characters, willing them to their success or demise, but who will succeed and who will fall?

Find out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended comic novel 14 April 2013

Mr. Camber has written a funny and gripping novel, featuring unique and quirky three-dimensional characters, intriguing interwoven plots, and a healthy (or unhealthy) dose of revenge lust. Lots of laughs too, without ever descending into farce. One to watch. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A laugh on every page 8 Mar 2013

It's hard to know what to say about this book, as it can be described in just two words. Those words are "brilliantly funny".

The concept of the two main characters taking it in turns to narrate each chapter is very unusual and is used to good effect. It lets you get into the head of each of them, and find out how their perception of themselves compares to how they actually come across to each other and to others.

There are so many good characters in this book, it's difficult to pick out a favourite. However the award for the most eccentric has to go to Amanda - I'm sure many of us have met a person like Amanda in real life!!

The twists and turns in the storyline give great comedy value, and I often found myself thinking "I wonder how he's going to get out of this one"!

Anthony Camber is clearly an author with a wicked sense of humour. I love it!
