Praise for The Aviary Gate'Hugely enjoyable ... fast-moving and deeply satisfying' Joanne Harris 'Teasing, erotic, suspenseful and expertly done' Daily Mail 'Forbidden love, sailors and secrets - fasten your seat belts for Hickman's period tome ... Think Jane Austen meets Pirates of the Carribean' In Style 'A magical, engrossing read that takes us inside a sixteenth-century harem - and into a world populatred by scheming, exotic characters ... This book bursts open like a firework display, with so much happening with threads of stories which are all exciting and mysterious and really compelling and you know they'll all weave together somehow (but I was enjoying the book so much I ddn't try to second guess anything). I'd read 'The Aviary Gate' from which this book progresses, but although you might read this first, or on its' own, it would be my advice to read it after reading 'The Aviary Gate'. I love the way Katie Hickman writes, in her fiction and non-fiction, her style's quick and economic and unsentimental, making for really great story-telling.

I really enjoyed The Aviary Gate and so was keen to read this sequel - but generally found it less engaging, though it's difficult to pinpoint exactly why. Hickman writes lush and sensuous prose, and plots well, but somehow never manages to exceed the boundaries of the historical romance genre.

Set in sixteenth century Venice, this does exactly what we would expect: throws in voluptuous courtesans, discontented nuns, traders on the make, separated lovers and legendary jewels. The whole thing is fragranced and sumptuous, full of opulent interiors and baroque emotion. It's pure escapism - but, like eating too much Turkish delight, by the end I craved something savoury and with bite.

Brilliant! 7 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Loved this! It's a rich tapestry of a novel beginning in a courtesans parlour and ending on the cacophonous streets of Venice. It's such a pleasure read, and the plotting is superb so you follow the twists and turns with delight. There are jewels and mermaids and giants and masked gambling. Take this on holiday with you or it's perfect if you commute. I'm going to read The Aviary Gate next, which I think came before this one... I've done it the wrong way round!
