Book Description

7 Jun 2012 The Pendulum Trilogy

Eric Albright, a twenty-six-year-old unemployed journalist, and Stuart Casey, a homeless old drunk, fall through a door in a graffiti-covered wall into the strange world of Levall, where a mountain-sized dragon with the powers of a god lies sleeping beneath a great white castle. Here they are the otherworlders, Pilgrims, and their lives are never going to be the same again.

In the castle the sinister Lord Vous rules with an iron fist as the Project, designed to effect his transformation into an immortal spirit, nears completion. But Vous' growing madness is close to consuming him, as is his fear of the imaginary being named 'Shadow'. And the arrival of the otherworlders in Levall is about to lend substance to that fear.

No one has ever seen what lies beyond the impossibly vast Wall that divides Levall, but the Pilgrims possess powers strong enough to break it down. If they do, what will enter from the other side?

Will Elliott's brilliantly subversive and creative imagination twists the conventions of the genre to create an unforgettable alternate-world fantasy.

'compelling' SciFi Now.

'Vividly imagined' Guardian.

From the Inside Flap

Eric Albright is a journalist - well, he would be if he could bring himself to actually get off his backside and do some real work. But he's not a bad bloke - he's always got time for Case, the homeless old drunk who mostly lives under the railway bridge near his flat. It's a pretty normal life, really... until the day a small red door appears on the graffiti-covered wall of the bridge, and a gang of strange-looking people - Eric's pretty sure one of them is a giant - dash out of the door and rob the nearby newsagent's. From that day on Eric and Case haunt the arch, waiting for the door to reopen - but Case isn't there the day it does, and Eric can't wait, though he does leave Case a message. So when Case arrives in Levaal himself, he's got no idea where Eric might be, or what trouble he's got himself into. But he needn't worry: there's trouble enough for both of them, because Levaal is a world between worlds, and they've arrived at a very important moment, for the Great Spirits are struggling to control the dragon-gods, who have grown restless in their sky prisons, and the world's Freiend and Lord, Vous, is simmering in madness as he schemes to join the ranks of the gods himself. A dark age has dawned, and Eric and Case, now Pilgrims, are about to learn why some doors should not be opened... With this first volume in The Pendulum Trilogy, Will Elliott's brilliantly subversive imagination twists the conventions of the alternate-world fantasy genre, providing an unforgettable visionary experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really my type of book 29 Aug 2012
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I love to read a story where I'm not sure what I'm going to get and whilst I was routing for this title from the start it felt a lot like a compendium of many of the idea's that have gone before in the fantasy world to one extent or another. It is a story of discovery, a tale of exploration and for the reader a story where the characters impact upon the world concerned becomes the main focus but in parts it felt that it was stalling as if the author needed chance to recharge his batteries to get some idea of where to go next.

Whilst it was an interesting read I did find it a difficult one as I didn't like the principle players always becoming more fascinated with the supporting cast which I felt didn't get much of a fair crack in the tale. All in its an OK book but I hope that the second story really picks up with a lot of the world building already done concentrating on character development to give me more to like. I'll have to wait and see.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit's Will-ing, The Book Is Weak 15 April 2012

As a big fan of Pilo Family Circus, I was looking forward to Will Elliott's follow-up but not without some sense of trepidation. 'A subversive and genre-bending fantasy epic'? Really? Wow, that's never been attempted before has it? Well, maybe only a couple of thousand times...
My worst fears were realised at about page thirty or so when our two everyman-type heroes are sucked into an alternative universe peopled by barbarians, wizards, mages, all the usual suspects. Honestly, you might as well wait for the next Terry Pratchett novel. The only subversive element I could detect was the odd bit of Anglo Saxon swearing.
This is the first of three volumes apparently, and I won't be returning for a second bite. Hugely disappointing, sad to say.
