Product Description

Gryllus is the hero of The Pig Scrolls. Gryllus is a pig. Well, not strictly speaking a pig. He's a man who got turned into a pig. More specifically, he was one of Odysseus's crew (you remember Odysseus - big bloke, hero, all round clever clogs) and the whole crew got turned into pigs by Circe, a witch, but Gryllus never got turned back. So Gryllus is a pig who can talk which, as you can imagine, causes a bit of a stir in Ancient Greece. Anyway... two of the gods have had a bet, the world as we know it is in danger, the only one who can save everyone is a smartypants talking pig. Oh dear ...

Listening to this is one of the best justifications I have discovered for taking Ancient Greek at O level - though admittedly, they are hard to find. This is the first story about Gryllus the Pig, there is also a sequel is called The Pig Who Saved the World and I believe that more are planned. The characters are nearly all 'real' ones from Greek mythology but the story is fast moving and witty with a great dead pan delivery. It is extremely funny, and while my children (8, 10 and 12, mixed sexes) found it amusing, it is even better if you are well grounded in Greek mythology. It was given to my 8 year old son, who loved it, but the 12 year old went straight off and bought the sequel (not available on audio) with his own cash. As it works for both childen and adults it is excellent for car journeys. (I can also recommend The Wee Free Men and a Hat full of Sky by Terry Pratchett on Audio CD for a similar audience).
