More About the Author

Born in Blackburn in 1907, Alfred Wainwright left school at the age of 13. A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life-long love affair with the Lake District. Following a move to Kendal in 1941 he began to devote every spare moment he had to researching and compiling the original seven Pictorial Guides. He described these as his 'love letters' to the Lakeland Fells and at the end of the first, The Eastern Fells, he wrote about what the mountains had come to mean to him:
"I suppose it might be said, to add impressiveness to the whole thing, that this book has been twenty years in the making, for it is so long, and more, since I first came from a smoky mill-town (forgive me, Blackburn!) and beheld, from Orrest Head, a scene of great beauty, a fascinating paradise, Lakeland's mountains and trees and water. That was the first time I had looked upon beauty, or imagined it, even."
A. Wainwright died in 1991 at the age of 84.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Lakeland Guide 6 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
As a regular walker for many years, I was brought up on AW's guide books. Ask any fell walker and they will all agree that these are the best, most informative books ever written. Aw's dedication and love of the Lake District is infectious. This apart they will remain for many many years as the definutive Lake District Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells;Bk 4 16 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
An excellent reproduction of Wainwright's original guide. The format is such that it is easy to carry when walking, but it is also easy to read. For anyone interested in Fell Walking there is no better guide than those produced by Wainwright.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most thorough guide available. 25 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
Im planning a trip to the Lake district in three weeks time, I wanted a thorough book or guide to help plan my days there. Having read the review above I thought I'd give this one a try. I'm glad I did what an excellent book. As well as being so detailed the diagrams of the expected views from the summits are worth every penny,(Many times I have admired the views from the tops of agonising climbs, not knowing exactly what I was looking at).
This is an excellent guide for the novice such as myself, and experienced walkers.
I highly reccomend it.
